Surveys of housekeepers around the nation show that housekeepers are sexually assaulted at over twice the rate of workers in other industries. Safety mandates for housekeepers are becoming prevalent, such as in Seattle, New York, Chicago and Sacramento county.

These mandates include sophisticated panic button requirements that preclude basic safety tools such as sirens or whistles. Technology that can immediately notify a hotel of a worker's location within a building is necessary and increasingly expected by employees, unions, and governments.

Indoor location services are the next frontier of in-hotel guest experiences. Using Bluetooth beacon technology, hotels can prompt guests on their smartphone as they approach a location, such as their room (to unlock their door), the hotel spa (offering a spa appointment), or the restaurant (advertising a happy hour special).

React Mobile, a leading employee safety platform, has released a new product offering that uses indoor Bluetooth beacons from Estimote, a leading beacon provider, to provide precise location information to safety staff inside a hotel. Even if a housekeeper is forced to a different room under duress, using beacons, their location can continuously be sent to responders, ensuring help arrives immediately. "Estimote Proximity and Location beacons give hotel safety providers such as React Mobile the real-time precise location of an employee inside of a building in an emergency without expensive equipment installation requirements", said Steve Cheney, Co-Founder of Estimote.

Choosing the right employee safety solution can be overwhelming. It's critical for hotel managers to understand how open platforms that integrate with existing industry platforms can save time, money, and minimize disruption to both guests and staff. Open platforms like, React Mobile, make things easy and work with a hotel's existing technology investments. "With hotels, one size doesn't fit all and properties of varying sizes have different needs and budgetary constraints," said Robb Monkman, Founder and CEO of React Mobile, a leading employee safety technology company. "To meet our customers' needs, we have integrated our safety platform into a number of leading hospitality technologies to help protect hotel employees during an emergency with unmatched location accuracy."

Hotels need cost-effective solutions that provide a high level of functionality while minimizing disruption to guests and daily operations. Hotel investment in tech is expanding both front and back of the house. Safety platforms that leverage these existing investments hit the sweet spot for today's hospitality providers.

In guest rooms, hotels are expanding tech offerings to meet customers' increasing demands of their experience. From in-room Amazon Echos to Bluetooth door locks to location-driven experiences, hotels are increasingly needing to be tech savvy to keep ahead of competitors. Safety platform offerings need to build on these existing investments to help hotels manage costs while meeting safety ordinances.

Companies such as Volara leverage Amazon's Echo voice technology to create exciting guest experiences. In a partnership with React Mobile, employees or guests can summon emergency help just by saying a key phrase.

"At the Alexis Hotel, enhanced safety and security has always been a priority for us," noted Jenne Oxford, Director of Operations at Kimpton's Alexis Hotel in Seattle. "The ability to quickly access emergency services through Alexa will be a benefit to guests and employees alike."

In addition to in-room experiences, hotels are increasingly using technology to manage operational costs. One such platform is with Amadeus HotSOS, the industry-leading service optimization platform that helps hotels optimize hotel services and customer engagement. By using a housekeeper's known location information through HotSOS, hotels can layer a safety platform directly into their HotSOS infrastructure. React Mobile's integration with HotSOS has already proven valuable at the Thunder Valley Casino and Resort in Sacramento. "React Mobile's platform allowed us to reach a housekeeper having a medical emergency while cleaning a guest room. Their platform alerted our security staff with their exact room location, allowing us to reach them within minutes", said Joel Moore, VP of Hotel Operations.

Employee safety has never been more in the public awareness. Knowing how to avoid vendor lock-in or over-investment can keep your employees safe without blowing your capital budget.
