Florida Gulf Coast University
The FGCU'S Resort & Hospitality Management program focus is comprehensive resort management. The specialized BS degree program began offering classes Fall of 2003, and is the culmination of resort industry leaders working on behalf of the University to design and offer a degree program tailored to the dynamic and complex needs of premier resorts in Southwest Florida. The 51 credit curriculum design meets this challenge by marrying traditional hotel, food & beverage hospitality education with recreation management, marketing and technology education. Students are able to apply what they learn in the classroom to work experience during a required 1500 hour, or approximately nine month internship. Each RHM student is paired with an industry mentor the spring of their junior year, to guide them as they make career decisions. In the near future students will have the opportunity to work on campus at the $8.4 million Sugden Resort & Hospitality Management Facility gifted to the University from philanthropists Margaret and Herbert Sugden. Currently in the planning stages, the academic boutique resort facility, will be a virtual learning laboratory for students offering guest accommodations, meeting facilities and a dining room for students to operate and manage.
