Intercontinental Cuisine at Kirkwood: Acclaimed chef-educator Paolo Monti and Iowa culinary program share long, savory partnership

From the opening words of his online biography, even a casual observer might detect the subtle wit and la dolce vita approach to life inherent in Paolo Monti. The veteran chef/educator/promoter/entrepreneur has endeared himself to thousands of visitors frequenting his "Cucina Italiana" cooking school in Lucca, Italy. For nearly a decade, Chef Paolo has also exported his authentic, understated style to students, faculty and friends of Kirkwood Community College in Iowa. By turns host and guest, Monti has infused his learned and lived culinary wisdom to hundreds from the Hawkeye State.

Lodging Leader Visits Kirkwood Hotel: AH&LA head touts new teaching facilities, salutes first community college student chapter

Of the hundreds of people who already have tried the new Hotel at Kirkwood Center, one overnight guest on November 4 had a more seasoned view of hotel culture than most. The professional staff and students at Kirkwood Community College had the opportunity to demonstrate their hospitality and culinary skills to a seasoned leader in the industry when Joseph McInerney paid a visit to the new Cedar Rapids facility.

Teaching Hotel has a Green, Clean Plan | Construction of Kirkwood facility includes energy-smart infrastructure with surprisingly short payback benefits

It isn't every day that the spirit of environmentally sound practice finds a fan base among the fiscally cautious, bottom-line planning set. But an innovative new project at Kirkwood Community College is proving the compatibility of those two goals. The Hotel at Kirkwood Center is nearing completion, with a target opening of July 2010. As its creative blend of top-shelf guest services and hands-on teaching opportunities opens the doors to the public, many energy efficient tools and systems will also go to work, providing superior comfort while keeping electric and water meters in check. Many of the systems rely on "smart systems" that detect changes in teaching lab, restaurant and guest room situations and make adjustments based on changing needs.

Kirkwood Community College will celebrate the steady progress being made on the construction of The Hotel at Kirkwood Center, a 71-room on-campus teaching laboratory for the college's hotel and culinary students with a 'topping off' ceremony on Tuesday, November 10th The hotel is on schedule to open in July 2010.
