Surrounded by a meandering river forming part of the subak rice field irrigation system and neighbouring a local community that has preserved its authentic Balinese charm, the resort drew inspiration from traditional local villages reminiscent of the landscapes that the owners first encountered when traveling to Bali in 1996.

In order to showcase the island's unique natural features, 85% of Nirjhara's 25 suites face distinctive views of waterfalls, terraced rice paddies and a gentle river. The resort's lush garden, planted with species endemic to Indonesia, immerses guests in nature while preserving a sense of intimacy. Its unique location, set amidst verdant landscapes evocative of Ubud, contrasts with its close proximity to Pantai Kedungu, a scenic beach known for its beginner and intermediate surf breaks.

Wellness is a key pillar of the guest experience at Nirjhara. The Retreat, a spa which was designed as a haven of relaxation at the heart of the property, draws inspiration from Bali's rich tradition of village healers to offer a menu of unique Blessings. Influenced by spiritual traditions such as Melasti, a purification ceremony celebrated in Hindu culture, and Nyepi, the silent day honored each year by the Balinese, The Retreat's Blessings seek to address present-day ailments through ancestral practices.

The spiritual essence of the resort can be found at The Shala, a riverside yoga pavilion overlooking Nirjhara's stunning waterfall. The sustainable structure, designed by award-winning green architects Ibuku, was built entirely in bamboo to create organic curves that complement its immediate surroundings. From sunrise yoga to sunset meditation sessions, guests are encouraged to engage in true relaxation through a schedule of complimentary classes guided by local experts.

At its core, Nirjhara seeks to redefine sustainable luxury by catering to a new breed of discerning yet environmentally conscious travelers who believe that high end hospitality can tread lightly on the planet without compromising on quality and service.

As a result, Nirjhara's ethos is a deep-rooted commitment to environmental, social and cultural issues. The resort was conceptualized as an extension of the local community and every effort has been made to minimize its impact on the environment. Besides the careful selection of materials used throughout the construction and furnishing of the property, such as upcycled wood cladding and locally sourced bamboo, Nirjhara has launched a variety of initiatives aimed at reducing its footprint on the ecosystem.

As part of its slow food approach to dining, Ambu, the hotel's main restaurant, aims to source most of its ingredients from the property's own vegetable and herb garden as well as local farms from the neighbouring villages.

Working towards its goal of eliminating single use plastic from the entire property, the resort bottles its own drinking water in recycled glass bottles and made the deliberate choice to remove single-use bathroom amenities in each of its suites.

The villas are styled to exacting standards with clean lines, earth tones and decorative accents to extract the quintessence of Indonesian design while offering a fresh interpretation of a tropical aesthetic. In each suite, Nirjhara has chosen to collaborate exclusively with local artisans from the archipelago to produce bespoke pieces that exhibit exceptional levels of craftsmanship, as well as emerging artists to showcase and promote contemporary Indonesian art.

Throughout their stay, guests can expect to be welcomed in distinctively Balinese fashion by discreet yet attentive hosts led by Alejandro Rueda, an industry veteran who previously worked at Potato Head's Katamama hotel in downtown Seminyak, and exclusive Katikies in Santorini. Nirjhara prides itself in crafting bespoke memories through highly individualized, bespoke service.

On top of its extensive wellness facilities, Nirjhara also boasts a private cinema where guests may enjoy nightly screenings, a highly curated boutique showcasing the work of local artisans, and a library for guests to relax and savour afternoon tea before sunset. Thanks to its proximity to Canggu, Ubud and Jatiluwih rice terraces, the resort was able to craft exclusive experiences for its guests to discover Bali's hidden secrets.

Nirjhara is designed to create a sense of destination where discerning travelers will feel at home, yet utterly transported. Encompassed entirely by tropical scenery, the resort will lend itself to personalized getaways and intimate celebrations. It will appeal to anyone looking to venture beyond the conventional boundaries of mainstream tourism and reconnect with nature.
