Khensani River Lodge
Tengile MalaMala Collection Expands with New Flagship Lodge
In December 2026, Tengile MalaMala Collection will unveil Khensani River Lodge, a new nine-suite lodge on South Africa's MalaMala Game Reserve, with bookings now open. 15 years in the making, the collection's most design-led lodge to date sits directly on the Sand River, conceived as a quieter safari experience shaped by life on the riverbank.
Khensani River Lodge is the sixth addition to the Tengile MalaMala Collection portfolio of heritage camps and contemporary lodges, all set along 27 kilometres of the Sand River in Mpumalanga, with an unfenced boundary to the Kruger National Park. Owned by the local community together with the Saad family, the collection is one of South Africa's few community-partnered safari brands, combining conservation with long-term local investment.
Community Partnership
Developed over more than a decade, Khensani — meaning 'gratitude' in Shangaan — has been named by the local community, honouring Tengile MalaMala Collection's close partnership with neighbouring communities. This shared stewardship ensures protection of the land while supporting local prosperity, through employment, skills development and conservation investment.
Life Along the Sand River
Located on MalaMala Game Reserve, one of South Africa's most wildlife-rich private reserves, Khensani River Lodge sits within an area renowned for some of the country's highest concentrations of game. MalaMala's extensive Sand River frontage provides a vital year-round water source for wildlife, while its 30-kilometre unfenced boundary with the Kruger National Park, together with neighbouring Tengile Game Reserve, allows wildlife to roam freely across a vast ecosystem. Traversing rights into the neighbouring reserve in the Sabi Sand further expand access to exceptional game viewing.
Architecture by Joy Brasler and interiors by Michele Throssell will marry contemporary design with a nod to safari nostalgia, creating a lodge that feels both deeply connected to its surroundings and distinctly modern. Inspired by the notion of a vessel that shelters and sustains, the design encourages guests to slow down and settle into the rhythms of the bush. Terracotta-toned incised plaster, locally sourced Sand River stone, weathered timber, woven grass and burnished metal details will anchor the lodge in the landscape, while handcrafted furnishings, curved forms and layered textures create a warm, residential atmosphere. Conceived as a continuous journey from arrival to riverfront, the lodge flows through a series of interconnected spaces that lead onto cascading decks shaded by mature willow wattle trees. Throughout the property, bespoke South African artworks and artisan-made pieces celebrate local craftsmanship, while an earthy palette of ochres, rich browns and silvery greys will reflect the colours and textures of the surrounding bush.
Designed to complement the landscape at every turn, days at Khensani River Lodge unfold between twice-daily game drives and moments of relaxation at the lodge. Nine expansive suites will feature open-plan living spaces, private plunge pools and generous private viewing decks. The main lodge will house dining areas, lounges, a library and wine cellar, all facing the riverbank to encourage guests to spend time outdoors. All-day dining will offer refined, seasonally inspired menus curated by Tengile MalaMala Collection Executive Chef, Warwick Thomas. Celebrating the richness of South African produce, dishes will showcase ingredients such as rooibos, naartjie, Dullstroom trout, venison and Karoo lamb. The traditional Boma will serve as a focal point for convivial evenings, centred around live-fire cooking and the flavours of the region. Guests can enjoy an array of grilled meats, fresh fish and seasonal vegetables infused with traditional Shangaan spices, alongside generous sharing-style salads and soups.
Separate from the main lodge yet still overlooking the river, a dedicated wellness centre will offer a quieter, more secluded setting, comprising a fully equipped gym, sauna, cold plunge, two treatment rooms and yoga spaces. Wellness at Khensani will extend beyond the spa, with guided bush walks, quiet mornings by the water and fireside evenings forming part of the wider experience.
Environmental Stewardship & Social Impact
Conservation underpins every aspect of the collection's philosophy, with significant and ongoing investment in anti-poaching operations, habitat management and ecological research. Rhino protection remains a defining priority, supported by extensive ranger presence, aerial surveillance and advanced monitoring systems. Predator research and monitoring — including the African wild dog — is conducted in collaboration with specialist conservation partners such as Panthera, ensuring a rigorous, science-led approach to safeguarding biodiversity.
Beyond the reserve, the MalaMala Foundation and Mintirho Community Development Trust support neighbouring communities through education, skills development, lodge-based internships and infrastructure initiatives, including water access such as the Hippo Roller water initiative. Each guest's stay contributes directly to a meaningful, measurable impact beyond the wilderness boundary.
