This winter, Maisons Pariente opens the doors of Saint Roch, its fifth address in France and second in the Alps. Perched on the Bellecôte piste at the foot of the slopes and steps from the village centre, this alpine refuge offers a different way to experience the mountains – one where the intensity of the landscape gives way to the calm of the interiors, and the peaks meet a world inspired by Slavic dachas and ancient Persian kingdoms.
A longtime institution of the resort, this maison is reborn under a new identity. Created as a true winter home in the mountains, Saint Roch continues the Maisons Pariente tradition of creating places deeply rooted in their surroundings – every detail shaped by sisters Leslie Kouhana and Kimberley Cohen based on childhood memories. Here, the mountain isn't put on display; it's lived differently.
A Landmark Reimagined at Altitude
The architecture is the work of studio Friedmann & Versace – Virginie Friedmann and Delphine Versace – built on a subtle dialogue between heritage, craft and contemporary design. Their approach, precise and shaped by material, answers exactly what the place was meant to become: a lived-in interior where the architecture recedes just enough to make room for feeling. Wood, chosen for the full richness of its textures, plays against stone, textiles and touches of bronze, while soft light reveals the surfaces and draws out finer details. Folklore gives way to emotion; the references are sensed more than shown, like travel memories returning unbidden.
Inspired by the Eastern dacha, the interiors unfold in a hushed atmosphere of patinated surfaces, velvet and handcrafted objects – a warm, deeply lived-in décor where nothing is merely decorative. Each piece was gathered from around the world for what it evokes, not what it proves, so that influences answer one another without ever competing: a world within a world where cultures meet quietly rather than announce themselves.
The marks of time and travel are everywhere: the agate-stained glass by Atelier Toporkoff, the mosaic frescoes by Pierre Mesguich, and ceramics made by French artisans. The art collection, guided by Amélie Maison d'Art, follows the same instinct: twentieth century works beside contemporary pieces, bronze bas-reliefs alongside Persian glazed vases, so that Saint Roch becomes a habitable gallery.
Rooms Like a Collector’s Home
Saint Roch has 37 rooms and suites arranged around shared spaces, each with its own character. Designed as true places to live, they invite guests to settle in rather than simply stay. From the Superior room to the Penthouse, every space shares the same language. Warm materials, subtle light and enveloping textures compose an atmosphere at once intimate and timeless. Wood, velvet and silk set a soft tone, while the furniture pairs bespoke designs with collected pieces, as in a collector's home. Deep hues – tobacco brown, garnet red, moss green, midnight blue – combined with cashmere prints and delicate marquetry, extend a sense of inner journey, between alpine refuge and dreamed-of dacha.
The collection rises through the house. The Superior, Deluxe and Prestige rooms move from intimate to expansive: wider volumes, more sculptural pieces, and mountain views that accompany without ever seeking effect. The suites open into full living spaces: from the Junior Suite's first proper salon to the Deluxe Suite's generous proportions, made to adapt to a couple, a family, or a whole winter's stay. On the fifth floor, two Prestige Suites of about 750 sq ft each can be booked on their own, their interconnecting spaces framing the mountain through every window. Together with three adjoining rooms, they make up the Penthouse, the entire top floor reserved for a single family or group; a true mountain home of its own.
Where the House Gathers
The living room, with its deep sofas, is the heart of the home, inviting guests to linger by the fire, take their time, and let conversation stretch on over a hot chocolate. As in the great travelers' houses of the past, connections form easily here, between guests from different worlds who share the same curiosity and love of beautiful things. In the restaurant, the light is low and the tables generously spaced. Guests come in from the cold and settle in without hurry; it is a room made to linger in, and to return to. The bar is made for the hours between the slopes and dinner: guests arrive without a plan and stay longer than intended, drawn in by warm, golden light, deep seating and cocktails built for balance rather than show.
Saint Roch thinks of its youngest guests, too. The Kids Club welcomes children into a world of their own. A dedicated space lets them feel at home, with their own places to discover, their own rhythm, their own freedom.
A Refuge Within the Refuge
The spa is conceived as its own retreat. The atmosphere draws on Ottoman hammams and Caucasian palaces: soft arches, richly veined marble, shades of ochre, rust and midnight blue. Mosaics and vaulted stone evoke the old caravan routes between the East and the mountains, a precious stop along a long journey, an imagined East carried up to altitude in search of something more inward. After the sharp mountain cold, guests are eased into an effortless letting-go by treatments from Tata Harper, the American house known for high-performance natural skincare. Its botanically precise formulas work deeply to release tension and warm the body. At the heart of the spa is the indoor pool. The shower is its most striking detail, clad in a marble mosaic by Pierre Mesguich, demonstrating rare, painstaking craftsmanship in which every fragment of stone plays its part. A light-filled fitness space completes it, a quiet room of its own before or after a day on the mountain.
On the Mountain and Beyond
Long the most coveted address in the French Alps, Courchevel 1850 rewards the journey and makes it effortless. Roughly 90 minutes from Geneva International Airport, it's among the most accessible of Europe's great ski destinations, with Lyon, Chambéry, Grenoble and Annecy airports all close by. The final stretch becomes part of the escape: a scenic drive up the mountain, a train to Moûtiers, or a private helicopter gliding into the Courchevel Altiport, minutes from the door. Directly on the Bellecôte slope, Saint Roch offers privileged access to the famed 3 Vallées – one of the largest ski areas in the world – unfolding right from the door. An on-site ski shop makes each departure and return effortless, with equipment and fittings handled in-house.
Beyond the skiing, the property's concierge shapes the days around each guest: dog-sledding through the forest, snowmobiling after dark, a helicopter flight over the peaks, or dinner served high on the mountain.
