The Meliá Collection Expands Italian Portfolio with Residenza del Cardinale
Meliá Hotels International's luxury Italian portfolio continues to grow with the opening of Residenza del Cardinale in Milan. Part of The Meliá Collection, the property marks the brand's Milanese debut joining Meliá’s other luxury properties in the city, Palazzo Cordusio Gran Meliá and ME Milan il Duca, and its sister property Tenuta di Artimino in Tuscany.
Set within a historic 13th-century palace just steps from the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, Residenza del Cardinale brings contemporary elegance to the heart of Milan’s historic 5 Vie district. The property has been unveiled following an extensive restoration by Progetto CMR and Studio Simonetti, carefully preserving the building’s architectural heritage while enhancing its energy efficiency and introducing modern comforts.
Residenza del Cardinale comprises 28 elegant rooms and suites, including three signature Penthouses with private terraces, alongside a bar and restaurant overseen by renowned Piedmontese Chef Carlo Zarri. Conceived as a contemporary tribute to Cardinal Federico Borromeo, the scholar and patron who founded the nearby Pinacoteca Ambrosiana in 1618, Residenza del Cardinale draws inspiration from his enduring cultural legacy. One of the world’s oldest art galleries, the Pinacoteca is home to Leonardo da Vinci’s celebrated Codex Atlanticus, alongside masterpieces by Caravaggio, Raphael, Botticelli and Titian. The hotel brings this legacy into the present day through a hospitality experience rooted in Milan’s rich artistic heritage.
The intimate Nocciola Restaurant & Bar seats 40 inside and overlooks the charming outdoor terrace in the courtyard, which can accommodate an additional 16 guests. The cuisine brings Piedmont to the table, celebrating the region's rich gastronomic tradition and its most celebrated local products - such as truffles, Fassona beef, and Barolo - the stars of iconic dishes like veal with tuna sauce and bagna càuda, reinterpreted by Chef Zarri's contemporary flair. The dining experience unfolds in two distinct expressions: during the day, a lunch service offering refined options that keep up with Milan's vibrant pace; and in the evening, a more sophisticated setting with fine-dining menus and an atmosphere to match.
Adorned with works by German photographer Karl Blossfeldt, the bar's walls celebrate the architecture of nature through images that enhance the shapes of leaves and flowers, mirroring the refined geometry of the building. Backed by a wall of soft orange hues, the space boasts an understated and discreet elegance which invites guests to escape from the hustle and bustle of the surrounding city.
The Meliá Collection encompasses properties with distinctive personalities and independent spirits, ensuring guests enjoy intimate spaces, historic heritage, and inspiring experiences throughout their stay.
