ROMEO Hotel Massa Lubrense
The ROMEO Collection Announces Expansion to Massa Lubrense
The ROMEO Collection is officially evolving into a new chapter with the announcement of its third hotel, ROMEO Massa Lubrense, debuting May 2027. Expanding a portfolio that already features a vibrant urban property in Naples and an avant-garde historic hotel in Rome, this highly anticipated destination emerges as an exclusive retreat suspended between architecture and nature. Masterfully designed by Kengo Kuma in more of the most coveted landscapes in Italy, with its spa signed by Sisley Paris and culinary program by Quattro Passi, ROMEO Massa Lubrense establishes an entirely new category of destination centered around reclaimed time, privacy and deep connection to place.
A Location Chosen Throughout History
Tucked away in a secluded natural reserve in Punta San Lorenzo, the closest point of the coastline to Capri, ROMEO Massa Lubrense is built directly onto a private natural fjord, a setting entirely unmatched along the Mediterranean coast.
This stretch of unspoilt coastline is not merely a place to be discovered, but one that has been intentionally chosen for over two thousand years by aristocrats, affluent travellers and artists as a haven of contemplation and privilege. Reimagined from the historic 1963 Hotel Delfino with a rigorous commitment to environmental restoration, the property sits strategically just 10 minutes by boat to Capri. This rare location will grant guests the opportunity to experience one of the world's most iconic destinations in harmony with the respite of privacy, space, and nature back in Punta San Lorenzo, a region celebrated for decades for its authentic, slow tourism.
Architecture & Design: Dissolving Into the Landscape
Maximizing its breathtaking and incomparable surroundings, ROMEO Massa Lubrense partnered with renowned architect Kengo Kuma to create a contemporary sanctuary that perfectly blends the best of architecture and nature. Working together with ROMEO Design, the two bring together an international vision and an intimate knowledge of the local territory.
Rooted in Kengo Kuma’s philosophy of dissolving architecture into the landscape and the Japanese concept of Ma (間), emptiness is not absence but a silent presence, allowing the architecture to dissolve into its surroundings and giving prominence to the relationship between people and the natural beauty of the fjord. The design palette relies on warm, organic tones and natural Mediterranean materials, including local tuff, travertine, American walnut, and matte ceramics. These materials, paired with transparency and the soft curves Kuma is known for, ensure the architecture achieves a sense of "visual subtraction," relieved of clutter, where the eye can truly breathe. The boundaries of the 63 rooms and suites dissolve entirely with true indoor/outdoor living, a zenithal view over the Gulf blurs the separation between infinity pool and sea, and a minimalistic design bound by the natural surroundings ensures the property becomes one with the sea, light, and nature that have defined this cliffside for centuries.
A Legacy of Italian Fine Dining: Quattro Passi at ROMEO
The choice of Massa Lubrense also reflects the Romeo Group’s desire to invest in an area internationally recognised for the richness of its local produce and its deeply rooted culture of hospitality. With this, the Romeo Group and the Mellino brothers, of the three-Michelin-starred Quattro Passi, announce a strategic partnership for the future development of the Quattro Passi brand, one of the most important names in Italian gastronomy, founded in Massa Lubrense. Now a company within the Romeo Group, Fabrizio and Raffaele Mellino are taking a direct role in shaping the brand’s new phase, starting with ROMEO Massa Lubrense. Quattro Passi will be the hotel’s fine dining restaurant and the Mellino brothers will contribute to the development of the entire Food & Beverage offering. Quattro Passi brings to ROMEO Massa Lubrense a gastronomic heritage built over more than forty years of history, founded in 1983 through the vision of Antonio Mellino and developed through the work of his sons Fabrizio and Raffaele. Today, the Mellino brothers represent the new generation of Quattro Passi: Fabrizio at the helm of the kitchen and Raffaele overseeing hospitality and the dining room. Together, they have helped consolidate the identity of a restaurant deeply connected to the local area, its produce and the culinary culture of this corner of the Mediterranean, while also bringing its language into a contemporary and international dimension.
Gastronomy has always been a distinctive component of the ROMEO Collection experience. At the Group’s hotels in Naples and Rome, the collaboration with Alain Ducasse has contributed to creating a high-level gastronomic offering, conceived not simply as a restaurant service, but as an integral part of the guest experience and the identity of the properties themselves. The arrival of Quattro Passi as part of ROMEO Massa Lubrense Hotel continues this approach and represents its natural evolution. The decision to develop the new hotel alongside one of the most recognised names in Italian gastronomy stems from the desire to bring to Massa Lubrense a culinary offering capable of engaging deeply with the local area while, at the same time, strengthening the positioning of the ROMEO Collection in one of the most iconic destinations in international hospitality.
