HSMAI HALL OF FAME HONOREES FOR 2001
Bob Stein, MHS - Upon entering the hotel industry in 1949 with a Chicago-based hotel management firm, Stein joined HSMA, and served as president of its Illinois chapter. Following several years as manager
of the 150-room Nippersink Manor in Genoa City, Wisconsin, Stein became a partner in Gardner and Stein Advertising, later known as Gardner, Stein & Frank, and started the agency's hotel/travel/tourism division. In the intervening 30-plus years, the agency created a reputation for specialized advertising and marketing services. Clients included hotel chains; independent hotels and resorts; travel firms and tourism organizations. In 1991, Stein sold the advertising agency and became a marketing consultant to the hospitality industry as president of GSF Marketing.
Having served in many leadership positions within HSMAI and other trade organizations, he has helped to advance the industry, the profession, and HSMAI as a whole. Additionally, Stein has helped young people develop their own careers by serving as a mentor and dedicating himself to the education process.
David R. Evans - With a career in the hospitality industry that spans more than 38 years, Evans is a long-time and highly-regarded industry leader. Evans' career began in September 1961 as sales manager for The Olympic Hotel in Seattle, managed by Western International (renamed Westin in 1984). After moving to Los Angeles for several years to work with the company's new flagship property, the Century Plaza, Evans returned to Seattle in 1973 as corporate director of sales at Western's headquarters, and a year later was named vice president and general manager, sales.
Following his time with Westin, Evans represented all Starwood's hotel brands (Luxury Collection/St. Regis, Westin, Sheraton, Four Points, and the new W). Based in Starwood's Seattle office, Evans'
responsibilities included supervision of worldwide customer relations, industry events and trade shows.
He has been the recipient of numerous achievement awards during his professional career, and has devoted much of his time to serving on the boards of a number of national and international organizations.
Evans, a past president of the southern California chapter of HSMAI, played a critical role in the development of its membership growth in the western part of the U.S., and has been an excellent role model for students and the industry's youth.
