London Hotels Choose Quieter, Safer And Greener Glass Recycling Service

Four of London's most prestigious hotels, The Ritz, Claridges, The Stafford and Le Meridien Grosvenor House, together with The Barbican Centre, have stepped into the future when it comes to disposing of their waste glass bottles. Each establishment has taken delivery of a revolutionary new Silipaktor™ glass-crushing machine, developed by Glass Compaction Services Ltd (GCS), a specialist glass compaction, collection and recycling service.

Designed specifically for the hospitality and leisure industries, the Silipaktor™ enables significant cost savings to be made for premises that generate one or more tonnes of waste glass each week. The glass crusher can crush all bottle sizes and colours, enabling precious space to be saved 'back of house'. The unique 220 litre bins hold 290 kgs of crushed glass (cullet), which equates to more than five 240 litre bins of uncrushed glass or about the same as a single 1,100 litre wheelie-bin.

The many benefits of the Silipaktor™ include space saving and the potential to reduce the number of daily waste collections, which in turn will help to relieve traffic congestion and harmful vehicle emissions in the capital. Noise pollution is a sensitive issue for hotels and restaurants at collection times, but because removal of the cullet is considerably quieter than dealing with whole bottles, these concerns are eliminated. Staff time is saved and the risk of accidents reduced as there is no need to separate the glass bottles by colour. All the compacted glass collected by GCS is guaranteed to be sent for recycling (i.e. none of it is landfilled) which is a further environmental plus for environmentally-aware hoteliers.

Aidan Fahy of The Stafford who also chairs the London hospitality environmental association, Considerate Hoteliers, said: "We are confident that the Silipaktor™ glass-crusher will be a cost-effective solution to the problem of disposing of the hotel's waste glass. It also offers significant environmental benefits in terms of reduced noise and traffic movements whilst optimising glass recovery for recycling. We hope that in taking this lead, other hotels will be encouraged to convert to glass compaction".

Daniel Pedreschi, Director of Food & Beverage Operations at Le Meridien Grosvenor House said: "At a time when we are looking to free-up unproductive space, the Silipaktor™ glass-crusher will help us achieve this as well as generate considerable cost savings".

According to Andrew Mackenzie, Managing Director of Glass Compaction Services, glass compaction is the way forward. "Recycling legislation is placing more and more onus to recycle on the producers of waste. We offer a simple but effective solution to the usual problems associated with the collection of glass. The Silipaktor™ glass-crusher has all necessary EU approvals and has been designed with the highest safety standards in mind. It is compact, robust and we back it up with a comprehensive repair and maintenance service" he said.
