TORONTO - Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, British Columbia and The Fairmont Winnipeg were recognized by BC Hydro and the Manitoba Round Table for Sustainable Development respectively, for their outstanding environmental contributions as part of Fairmont Hotels & Resorts' Green Partnership Program. The five B.C. properties have made sizeable reductions to their energy consumption, earning them BC Hydro Power Smart Certified status; and The Fairmont...
British Columbia Properties Named Power Smart Certified by BC Hydro - With over $450,000 in total electricity savings since 1999 and an aggressive target to further reduce by 20 per cent over the next five years, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts recently became the first hotel brand and only the second company in the province to be Power Smart Certified by BC Hydro. The collective electricity savings from the company's five B.C. region hotels are significant enough to provide power to The Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, The Fairmont Waterfront and The Fairmont Vancouver Airport for one full year. Fairmont Hotels & Resorts' commitment to energy efficiency consists of multiple Power Smart projects at their B.C. locations, including modified lighting, rooftop and boiler upgrades, installation of energy management control systems, and training and awareness programs for employees.
Power Smart Certification is a new initiative by BC Hydro and is reserved for a select group of organizations demonstrating superior energy efficiency leadership with a history of continuous improvement in internal energy efficiency. The organization must be in the top 25 per cent of their industry with a target to be in the top 10 per cent regarding overall energy efficiency.
The Fairmont Winnipeg Wins Sustainable Development Award - The Fairmont Winnipeg's revolutionary role in implementing and encouraging sustainable development in the hotel industry has been recognized with the prestigious Sustainable Development 2002 Award, Business Category. The awards, sponsored by the Manitoba Round Table for Sustainable Development, recognize Manitoba groups and individuals showing leadership in promoting economic development in harmony with the environment. The honor is the culmination of numerous initiatives undertaken by the hotel through Fairmont's Green Partnership Program, including the use of suppliers whose products save energy, donations of furniture and other goods to local charities, fund raising for polar bear research, and the active promotion of environmental stewardship.
This is not the first time The Fairmont Winnipeg has been acknowledged for its environmental efforts. In 2000, it became the only hotel in Manitoba and Saskatchewan to earn a four-leaf rating by TerraChoice Environmental Services. The designation is granted to national industry leaders for environmental performance in both hotel management and facilities.
Tradition of Environmental Responsibility- Fairmont Hotels & Resorts has long understood the value of environmental responsibility as a core operating principle. This past February, Natural Resources Canada Office of Energy Efficiency recognized the hotel operator as a hospitality industry leader for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, specific hotels were recognized including:
- The Fairmont Royal York, whose updated HVAC system and other related measures resulted in savings of over $640,000 over a period of two years.
- Fairmont Château Laurier replaced their central steam system with their own steam system, performed a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) retrofit, a lighting retrofit and new digital controls. These measures saved over $244,000.
- Fairmont Le Château Frontenac was able to save approximately $225,000 annually, by undertaking lighting retrofits, installing automation controls, and other energy-saving measures.
- The Fairmont Hotel Vancouver performed a lighting retrofit throughout the facility, HVAC measures, an energy management and control system upgrade, and central plant measures resulting in an annual savings of over $707,000.
Since the launch of Fairmont's Green Partnership Program in 1991, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts has initiated the highest possible standards of environmental responsibility throughout the industry. The commitment to reduce energy consumption in the Canadian properties has resulted in a $1.6 million cost savings, as well as the elimination of 6,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions released into the atmosphere. Other proactive environmental measures have resulted in savings in excess of $3.2 million to the company's bottom line. A large portion of these cost savings is a direct result of property efforts. The Fairmont Acapulco Princess and The Fairmont Pierre Marques save $362,000 yearly in municipal water costs by sharing their own water treatment facility. The plant is capable of producing one million gallons of fresh water a day and can recycle 70% of the wastewater produced by the resorts, with the remaining greywater used to irrigate the golf courses and nearby lagoon, and the separated sludge reused as fertilizer. In 2003, Fairmont will expand its award winning environmental program to its properties in the United States.
