Making the Environment a Priority…or at least getting it “on” the list

Society increasingly requests that individuals adopt environmentally compassionate behavior…even more so for corporations.

But making everyday decisions about being environmentally friendly just isn't a top priority for many hoteliers. Most talk about going green, and they recycle, but they haven't done much more to reduce the negative effects their corporate planning may have on the environment. "Though our company is ecologically friendly, I can't say that we do anything special right now in the area of furnishings," says a local hotel from a large chain.

Why the disconnect? It's not that the hospitality industry isn't aware of its impact on the earth; it's just that too often, going green is presented as a single all-or-nothing task, a characterization that gets it shoved to the bottom of to-do lists. Some advocates for going green hotels theorize that a lack of reasonably priced, eco-friendly products is to blame; others say that there aren't yet enough suppliers getting on the green bandwagon to offer alternatives and deliver them at prices corporations are willing to pay.

A common misconception is that it is strictly a dollars and cents issue. Many believe that Green is more expensive. Most industries are about the bottom line and turning a profit, and that thinking really prohibits people from making a step toward green.

Certainly, there's a middle ground between virtuosity and practicality. The problem is, that the green comfort zone is going to be different for every hotel, at least until the industry gets a handle on what the standard minimum is for calling yourself “eco-friendly.”

Times are changing and distributors are stepping up to the plate. Companies like Sterling Hospitality have stepped up to give hotels a choice when selecting a truly environmentally friendly bed while maintaining the highest level of quality and comfort.

When it comes to beds, you should not choose green over comfort. Selecting both will guarantee your client a great nights sleep and your hotel a place in the BOOK OF GREEN from both an environmental and profit standpoint!
