Ambition
The approach of the management team of the Eden Amsterdam American Hotel exceeded above expectations throughout ambition, motivation, innovation and attention for the history of the hotel.
The Management team under charge of Claire van Campen (34) succeeded last year in giving the hotel name and stature and bring it back to one of the best leading hotels in the city of Amsterdam.
During the past 2 years the hotel has been radically renovated inside as well as outside of the hotel.
Also the famous Art Deco Café Americain was renovated as well as the well known Bar Americain. 101 guest rooms among others the Ruud the Wild Art Suite and the meeting areas were also renovated.
Work of art
The Dutch Hotel Award 2008 (artwork made of chrome and crystal) has been handed over in the Eden Amsterdam American Hotel during an official ceremony last Friday!
The Eden Amsterdam American Hotel is the 5th winner in a row of the prestige achievement since the launch of the Dutch Hotel Award in 2004.
The Amsterdam American Hotel is built in 1900; the hotel is an important example of architectural Art Nouveau and has been a listed building since 1972. Some architectural features can be traced back in the famous Café Americain and the 175 guest rooms. The guestrooms still feature original stained-glass windows and vanities lined with an elegant granite surface.
The original American Hotel was built in 1882 by the Dutch architect Steinigeweg, with typical American accents in its interior. The most important characteristic is the bell tower which stuck out on an altitude of 36 meters above the Leidsesquare. The hotel became the place-to-be for those who wanted to be seen.
With approaching the 20th century, the 20 years old building became simply too small. The American hotel entered a new phase between 1900 and 1902. The style of the previous building was preserved when architect Kromhout designed a great Dutch Art Nouveau building with floating arcs and elegant bell tower. Architectonical details can be found in the façades of the hotel, among others tracery works, mosaic, copper (bird-)lamps. The life-size statues on the façade at the Leidsekade symbolize the five continents of the world.
The famous Café Americain is already from the beginning the place to be for musicians, artists and intellectuals. Café Americain is famous for its Art Deco interior, with the large arches, original Tiffany lamps and glass stained details in high windows. The wallpaintings show the story of Shakespeare"s Midsummer Night"s Dream.
In 1972 the building was added officially on the list of historical monuments.
Nowadays the hotel has 175 guestrooms, of which 16 junior suites and the famous Mata Hari suite. All guestrooms are equipped with facilities a guest can expect of a deluxe hotel
The Amsterdam American Hotel is the best located hotel in Amsterdam: in the middle of the Leidseplein, the famous square with great restaurants, bars, theatres, and a footstep away from the Rijksmuseum, van Gogh Museum and the beautiful Vondel Park.
