Meliá Hotels International Continues Growth in Asia with Two New Hotels in China and Vietnam

The Gran Meliá Xi'an Hotel, the second hotel for the company in China after the opening of the Gran Meliá Shanghai Hotel in 2009, is located in New Qujiang district in Xi'an, one of the cradles of Chinese civilization, as well as the eastern end of the famous Silk Road. The hotel will open in 2013 and will have 419 rooms, two restaurants, a bar, YHI spa, convention centre and Red Level service, the VIP service at Gran Meliá which includes...

Xi'an has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in China since the discovery of the Terracotta Army in 1974. The city has more than 3,000 years of history and was the capital of ancient dynasties for over 1,100 years.

The Meliá Danang Hotel will open in December 2012 and is located on Non Nuoc beach on the outskirts of Danang, one of the largest cities in southern Vietnam and very close to sites declared part of World Heritage by UNESCO, such as the imperial city of Hue, the ancient town of Hoi An, and the ruins of My Son. The hotel will provide 150 rooms including 10 villas, a restaurant, bar, YHI spa and The Level executive floor, characteristic of the Meliá brand.

The Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of Meliá Hotels International, Gabriel Escarrer, who recently visited Asia to sign the agreements for the two hotels, said that these new projects "will help us lay the foundations for achieving a much larger presence on the continent" . He also assured that "the response of this region to the Meliá experience has been outstanding, and these new hotels will allow us to reinforce the meaning of our brand, our services, our know-how and the reliability we offer in two countries of historical importance in Asia."

Both hotels have been added under management contracts to the portfolio of Meliá Hotels International in Asia, which currently consists of one hotel in China, one in Vietnam, one in Malaysia, four in Indonesia and one more due to open in Indonesia (Meliá Surabaya).

The Asia-Pacific region has become a strategic area for growth for the company, and in 2011 the hotel company strengthened its corporate structure in the region to boost further growth in the region consistent with its Strategic Plan for 2012-2014. During this period, Meliá Hotels International intends to extend its presence in the most dynamic and relevant markets for the future, such as Asia, the Middle East and Latin America. Currently about 90% of the hotels in the Company pipeline to open are located outside Spain.
