In the current business climate time is tight, money is tight, and the micro and macro picture is constantly changing. For anyone managing a business – big or small, public or private – The Essential Manager by Enda Larkin is particularly timely. It strips away all the hype and jargon that attached itself to management thinking during the boom years and returns the focus to the only thing that really matters in organisation life: results.

About the Book: For managers time is always at a premium, particularly now with such fewer resources, increased demands and increased competition. Pausing to study lengthy tracts on management theory or pore through literature is simply not an option. What is needed and what works is concise, targetted and readable texts that speak to their needs and experience. The Essential Manager: 30 Core Elements of Leadership by Enda Larkin is the precise answer to such requirememts. It provides useful guidance across three dimensions that are known to drive results in these difficult times: Personal Competence is dealt with in the book's first section, Employee Engagement, in the second section, and Strategic and Operational effectiveness which makes up the third section.

Larkin, a hugely experienced management consultant and trainer, writes in an engaging and jargon free style which which helps to translate important concepts and messages into user-friendly and readable terms. The 30 pieces that make up the three sections are all based on solid research and emphasise the practical application of theory. Uniquely, he does not separate the leadership and management functions and argues that to have one without the other is akin to trying to tie your shoelaces with one hand. This clear emphasis on leadership as pivotal to the manager's role, combined with the book's 30 practical, concise and focused texts make The Essential Manager a key text for managers at all levels.
