Momentum Builds at 4th Annual Boutique Design New York

Hospitality's Hottest Trade Fair Balances Increased Growth with Boutique Atmosphere

Boasting a trade fair floor 50 percent larger than last year, Boutique Design New York (BDNY) provided 5,190 design professionals, hospitality owners and operators, and purchasing executives with a look at the latest products and trends in hospitality design, November 10-11, 2013, at New York City's Jacob K. Javits Convention Center.

"I love the philosophy of BDNY" said George Scammel, Vice President, Global Design, Wyndham Worldwide. "The whole idea of boutique and boutique product – it really makes the manufacturers think about what it is that they want us to understand and know about their products. We also are looking at what's new and innovative as opposed to looking at an entire catalogue."

"Everybody has loved our space here at BDNY. We have so many people inside the booth that we don't have enough seating, but we couldn't have more seating unless we created a larger bar" said Diana Dobin, President & Chief Sustainability Officer, Valley Forge Fabrics, Inc. "It is the fastest growing show in our industry. And truly, our customers wanted us to be here."

Co-located with the International Hotel, Motel + Restaurant Show®, the exhibit hall featured 375 interior product manufacturers of furniture, lighting, wall coverings, fabric, seating, accessories, artwork, carpet and flooring, materials, bath and spa. The entire trade fair floor was designed by King & Grove, providing a light and airy sensation with a neutral color palette and tensile structures and white orbs suspended from the ceiling. Three exhibitor-inspired spaces provided sponsored-product, design driven areas for networking and seminars, including 'The Bar at BDNY' by dash design, 'Shades Terrace Bar' by Design Poole, and the 'King & Grove Lounge' designed by King & Grove. Design challenges were brought to life with the build-outs on the trade fair floor of competition winners 'Diva Guestroom' by Studio Gaia and the 'Taco Bar' by Joemy Vega, splashed with a hand painted graffiti mural.

A comprehensive seminar program was offered with options for CEU accreditation, addressing such topics as how to make every project more sustainable, the latest trends in lighting and design technology, what's new in New York hospitality design, and the new rules for hotel design, planning and development.

Highlighting the seminars was the 2nd annual ISHP/BD Owner's Grill, moderated by Lori Patten, ISHP President and Principal, Patten Purchasing and Mitch Parker, past ISHP President and Principal, The Parker Company, and featuring notable industry leaders including David A. Black, Managing Director, Project and Development Services, Jones Lang LaSalle; Tim Dixon, President and CEO, Dixon Development; Ron Kollar, Chief Development Officer, Tishman Hotel Company; Igor Krnajski, Senior Vice President, design and construction, Denihan Hospitality Group; Thomas Prins, Partner, Gemstone Hotels & Resorts LLC; Brad Wilson, President, Ace Hotel Group; Thomas Trout, VP Architecture and Planning, Americas, Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group. The panel addressed their views and opinions regarding the state of the hospitality industry, trends, growth opportunities and design from the owners' perspectives.
