Scandic Hotels, the largest hotel company in the Nordic countries, has signed a long lease agreement with property owner Evars Hoteller to take over hotel The Mayor in the Danish city of Aarhus.

Scandic The Mayor was formerly known as the Aarhus Plaza and was run by Scandic 1999 – 2014. The building enjoys a premium location – the hotel is encircled by the Music Hall, the City Hall and the City Hall Park. It's only a few minutes' walk to the Central Station and Aarhus Harbor, as well as the best shopping and cultural experiences that the city has to offer, such as the Concert Hall and ARoS Aarhus Art Museum.

The city of Aarhus has a well-developed business community and a large university and the whole region boasts a strong market with high demand in the area. Aarhus is at the cultural and economic core of the region and the largest center for trade, services and industry in Jutland. With its 330 000 inhabitants its Denmark's second largest city. Great infrastructure makes the city easily accessible to both national and international visitors.

–Besides Copenhagen, Aarhus is the most important region in Denmark for us and taking over The Mayor is both exciting and strategically important. The stronger market and extensive renovations that has been made, together with our experience and knowledge from operating this hotel, means this will be a very possible addition to our portfolio, says Jens Mathiesen, Managing Director Scandic Denmark.

Scandic plans to take over the operation of The Mayor as of March 1, 2018. The hotel will offer 162 rooms, a restaurant, bar and a relaxation area. Since Scandic ceased its operations in 2014, the hotel has undergone extensive renovation and in connection with the new lease agreement, Scandic and the property owner have agreed on continued renovations focusing on rooms, bathrooms and ground floor.

Scandic is the leading hotel operator in the region with two hotels in the city. On May 11, the municipality of Aarhus announced that the project group, in which Scandic participated as the operator, won the agreement for the new congress hotel at the port of Aarhus.
