InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has announced plans to expand in Israel, beyond its current footprint in Tel Aviv. In just two and a half years, the company will open a new hotel in Jerusalem, which will become its second property in that city. The new hotel will be called InterContinental Jerusalem.

Investment in this new hotel, which will be located in the city center on King George Street near the Jerusalem Great Synagogue, is being tabbed by experts at somewhere around $130 million, a sizeable investment, to be sure.

The Site of IHG's Newest Jerusalem Hotel

The site of IHG's newest hotel in Jerusalem is also noteworthy. This property will be built on the ruins of a four-storey Shikun u'Binui Solel Boneh Infrastructures Ltd. building. It will also be opposite the Jewish agency building in the city.

The property will consist of two buildings. One of these buildings will be a hotel with 229 rooms on 17 floors, while the other will be a luxury apartment building. Also, the hotel will have a 130-square meter presidential suite that it plans to use to compete for hosting high-level visitors. Traditionally, dignitaries and other famous guests have made their stays in the city at the King David Hotel.

A Glimpse at InterContinental Hotel's Other Expansion Plans

InterContinental Jerusalem, however, will not be the hotel company's only property located in the city. As previously mentioned, IHG already has Jerusalem Crowne Plaza. That hotel was planned as part of a joint venture between the famed architects Yehuda Feigin and Arthur Spector.

Karin Sheppard, who is the IHG managing director for Europe, recently said while visiting Israel that the group has hotels in 190 locations worldwide, as well as 60 projects in its pipeline, which includes future properties in Sofia and Jakarta.

To give a better picture of the scope of IHG's importance and reach, the company also includes famed brand names such as Crown Plaza and Holiday Inn Express, as well as the up and coming Indigo line of boutique hotels, which actually happens to also have a location in Israel, this time in Tel Aviv.

A Look Inside the InterContinental Jerusalem

Officials with the new hotel have said that the InterContinental Jerusalem is being built from scratch. It will provide a contrast to the Jerusalem Waldorf Astoria, which was recently sold for $130 million by the Reichman family to French Jewish businessperson Michel Ohayon. That price actually constitutes a loss for the investors on their investment in the hotel's construction.
