Santa Monica’s Shore Hotel Celebrates Seven Years of Sustainability
Santa Monica's Shore Hotel is celebrating seven years of sustainability! Since opening in 2011, the city's first LEED Gold-certified hotel has saved 31 million watts of energy (enough to power the average U.S. home for 34 months), 5.2 million gallons of water (enough to fill nearly eight Olympic-sized swimming pools) and 28,000 plastic water bottles from entering our landfills, all through the hotel's eco-friendly management practices.

Since opening in 2011, the city's first LEED Gold-certified hotel has saved 31 million watts of energy (enough to power the average U.S. home for 34 months), 5.2 million gallons of water (enough to fill nearly eight Olympic-sized swimming pools) and 28,000 plastic water bottles from entering our landfills, all through the hotel's eco-friendly management practices.
The hotel will continue to lead in sustainability by launching a series of new initiatives in honor of their Seventh Anniversary, including a switch to reef-friendly sunscreen, use of biodegradable water packages in rooms, the launch of new scholarships for SMC's Environmental Studies program, and more. Shore Hotel will also share the love for sustainability with their clients: Travelers will enjoy special discounted rates from October 1 to December 25, 2018.

Achievements in Sustainability: Shore Hotel 2011-2018
- Guests have been rewarded $73,800 in savings from Shore Hotel's Green Clean program, which has saved water, energy and resources on over 8,800 room cleanings
- Shore Hotel has donated $20,00 to Heal The Bay by giving $15 of each purchase of the Shorely Sands mascot to the organization
- The hotel has saved 31 million watts of energy through the use of energy efficient light bulbs, participation in Santa Monica's opt-in energy-saving program "Demand Response Unit" (being the only hotel in California to do so) that reduces the energy use during peak hours, and through their solar energy-powered swimming pool and Jacuzzi, also 75% of Shore Hotel's roof surface is covered in Solar Reflecting material which reduces heat islands
- Over 5.2 million gallons of water have been saved via the AquaRecycle® Laundry Water Recycle System reduces laundry water usage by 80%, and the use of native, drought-resistant landscaping
- 75% of the hotel's construction materials were recycled or salvaged, including metals, concrete, stucco, terrazzo, wood and carpet; the hotel gym's floor was made from recycled tires; lobby chairs are upholstered with 100% pre-consumer recycled polyester
New Initiatives in Sustainability: Shore Hotel 2018
- For the 2018-2019 school year, Shore Hotel launched a new scholarship for two Santa Monica College students in the Environmental Studies program
- Shore Hotel is the first California hotel to offer free Raw Elements reef-friendly non-Oxybenzone sunscreen to guests from a poolside dispenser
- Shore Hotel is replacing their in-house water program to eco-friendly brand JUST Water; Bottled locally, JUST Water is made from biodegradable paper with a corn product exterior and cap and lined with recyclable aluminum; JUST Water will be available for free at the front desk and valet (11.2 fl oz only) and larger 16.9 fl oz bottles will be available for purchase in rooms
- As of August 2018, Shore Hotel has gone strawless, pre-empting the city initiative to reduce plastics in food outlets; by September 2018, Shore Hotel will eliminate plastic to-go products as well
