Porto’s newest cultural destination, World of Wine (WOW), has announced the first line-up of vinicultural workshops and wine tastings at The Wine School, which opened in May 2021. Designed to cater to the curious, the connoisseur and the professional, The Wine School is the ideal place to learn everything about wine including how to differentiate, analyse and choose wine, and how to pair it with food and chocolate. The newly launched courses will provide an overview of Portuguese wine and wine in general, in an international context.
WOW has also launched a series of in-depth guest-speaker events, called ‘Thematic Tastings’, led by leaders in their field - producers, wine makers, and other experts in the industry.
The new courses, housed in the old Croft Port building, can be pre-booked and can also be booked as a gift ticket, valid for 6 months after reservation. Here are several of the workshops and tastings that are currently available to book:
‘Demystifying Wine’ and ‘Demystifying Port Wine’ Workshops
Designed for those with little to no knowledge of wine, but with a curiosity and willingness to learn, the Demystifying Wine workshop teaches participants the basics of wine across the globe. After just two hours, oenophiles will learn how it’s made, basic terminology to distinguish and describe wines, and tools that help in tasting and analysis, offering a new level of comfort when purchasing or ordering wine. Meanwhile, the Demystifying Port Wine workshop is designed for those only just discovering the magic of Port wine but with some knowledge and a curiosity to learn more about one of the world’s finest varieties.
‘Portuguese Wine Regions’ Workshop
The Portuguese Wine Regions workshop has been designed for those with a deeper knowledge of wine and winemaking. Over the course of two-hours, WOW’s sommeliers will help participants identify the characteristics of Portugal’s many wine regions and their influence on the profile of their wines.
‘The Perfect Match’ Wine Pairing Workshops (launching August)
In partnership with The Chocolate Story at WOW, the Wine & Chocolate Workshop will launch later this summer and reveal how to perfectly pair these two flavour palettes, over the course of an hour, by tasting 5 different wines and 5 of WOW’s very own Vinte Vinte chocolates. Meanwhile, the Wine & Food workshop explores the interaction of wine and food through a series of tasting sessions.
More demanding levelled workshops and courses will become available throughout the rest of the year, which will promote more in-depth training, including courses in partnership with internationally recognised wine educational institutions.
‘Thematic Tastings’ Events Programme
WOW is hosting a series of guest-events at The Wine School that explore diverse topics in detail and are an opportunity to taste exclusive wines that will accentuate and enhance the discussion and learning experience. Amongst the first in the series will be with Rafael Miranda, one of the four brothers who developed the Mãos project in the Douro Valley (12th August at 7pm), and Celso Pereira of Vértice Douro sparkling wine (26th August at 7pm).
Following the workshops and tastings, participants can put their new-found knowledge to the test over delicious traditional Portuguese fare, surrounded by old Croft Port barrels, at The Wine School’s T&C restaurant.
