INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – JW Marriott Indianapolis will soon mark a leadership transition as longtime General Manager Phil Ray announces his retirement, concluding an accomplished 40-year career in hospitality. Upon his retirement, Ray’s successor, Fernando Estala, most recently General Manager of Indianapolis Marriott Downtown, will assume leadership of the hotel.

Ray has served as the General Manager of JW Marriott Indianapolis since 2014. Since then he has overseen the daily operations of the 1,013-room hotel, its more than 103,000 square feet of meeting and event space, and its collection of dining experiences.

Under Ray’s leadership, JW Marriott Indianapolis earned numerous honors, including Condé Nast Traveler’s Top Hotels in the Midwest, several Stella Awards, the MC Golf Key Award, and Indiana’s Leading Hotel in the 2025 World Travel Awards. Among his most recent accomplishments was the opening of Dean’s Steak & Seafood and the reimagining of the hotel’s lobby and lobby bar.

Ray first arrived in the Indianapolis market in 2003 as General Manager of the Omni Severin Hotel before returning to the Marriott family and joining White Lodging in 2010 as General Manager of Indianapolis Marriott Downtown.

“Initially, I came to Indianapolis for a 30-day assignment, and that 30 days turned into 22 wonderful years,” said Ray. “Indianapolis has evolved tremendously during that time and is now recognized as one of the nation’s leading destinations for meetings and conventions.”

That collaborative spirit was showcased when the NCAA selected Indianapolis to host the first post-pandemic NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. JW Marriott Indianapolis and Indianapolis Marriott Downtown, along with several other connected downtown hotels, welcomed the tournament’s 68 teams, creating a carefully managed “bubble” environment for student-athletes.

Ray began his hospitality career with Marriott International in 1985 in finance at Boston Long Wharf after earning his bachelor’s degree in accounting from Bentley University. Over the course of his career, he held leadership roles across the country, including in Dallas, San Francisco, New York City’s Plaza Hotel, Rhode Island, and his hometown of Portland, Maine.

Along the way, Ray served in a range of operational and financial leadership positions, including Controller, Director of Finance, Director of Operations, and General Manager. His individual recognitions include Omni Hotels General Manager of the Year (2007), Indiana Hotel & Lodging Association General Manager of the Year (2008), the Indianapolis Tourism Leadership Award (2009), and Marriott Franchise Hotel General Manager of the Year (2018).

Beyond the hotel, Ray has remained deeply involved in the Indianapolis hospitality community, serving as President of the Greater Indianapolis Hotel Association and Chairman of the Indianapolis Restaurant and Lodging Association. Since 2011, he has also served as volunteer board president of the Indianapolis chapter of Back on My Feet.

Ray will officially retire on May 31, 2026, with Estala assuming the role of General Manager on June 1.
