After exploring what accommodation eco-certifications mean and how travelers might choose eco-certified hotels, we found ourselves reflecting on another question: What does sustainability look like in our own day-to-day business travel?

As a hospitality supplier, GCSTIMES knows sustainability conversations are becoming increasingly important across the industry. While there is no one-size-fits-all solution, we believe it is equally important to look inward and think about how we travel as a business. That is one of the reasons we introduced an internal Sustainable Business Travel Guide, designed to help employees make more thoughtful travel decisions while balancing operational needs.

Starting with a Simple Question: Is Travel Necessary?

Before a business trip moves forward, employees are encouraged to pause and consider a few practical questions:

  • Could this meeting be held online?
  • Could a local colleague support the task?
  • Could several meetings be combined into one trip?

Sometimes travel is essential. Sometimes there may be alternatives. The goal is simply to encourage more intentional planning.

Choosing Lower-Carbon Ways to Travel

When travel is needed, the guide encourages lower-carbon transportation options whenever practical.

Rail Before Air

For routes where rail is a realistic option, trains and high-speed rail are encouraged due to their lower environmental impact compared with flying.

Smarter Ground Transportation

When vehicles are required, new energy vehicles are prioritized where available. Colleagues traveling together are also encouraged to share transportation whenever possible. For shorter distances, public transport, walking, cycling, or shared mobility can also be practical alternatives depending on the destination.

More Thoughtful Flying

When flights are unavoidable, employees are encouraged to consider options such as direct flights where possible, airlines supporting Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) initiatives, and economy class for lower emissions per passenger.

Business travel will always remain important in hospitality. For us, the focus is not on traveling less at all costs, but on traveling more thoughtfully where possible.

Looking Ahead

Sustainability is often discussed in big-picture terms, but many meaningful changes begin with everyday decisions. For GCSTIMES, business travel is one area where small choices can gradually add up.

In our next article, we'll share how our Sustainable Business Travel Guide approaches another important topic: choosing greener accommodation during business trips.
