Summer tourism in Europe has traditionally focused on Mediterranean destinations such as Spain, Italy, Greece, and southern France, where peak travel months are typically July and August.
In recent years, however, more frequent and intense heatwaves across southern Europe have contributed to changes in travel behavior. Some travelers are increasingly considering alternative destinations and travel periods, including what are now referred to as "coolcations", holidays in locations with milder summer temperatures.
Rising interest in cooler destinations
Coolcations generally refer to travel to Northern Europe or Alpine regions, where summer temperatures are typically lower than in southern Europe. Destinations including Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, Slovenia, and Wales have seen increased attention from travelers seeking to avoid extreme heat.
Data from Trip.com Group indicates that searches related to cooler destinations and "coolcations" increased by 74% year over year in the first half of 2026. The company also reported higher search volumes for terms such as "escape the heat", "summer escapes", and "cool summer retreat".
Differences from traditional summer holidays
Traditional summer tourism in southern Europe is largely associated with beach holidays, coastal resorts, and outdoor leisure activities in warm climates.
Coolcations, by contrast, are more often associated with:
nature-based activities such as hiking, cycling, and lake tourism
travel in regions with average summer temperatures of around 15°C to 25°C
greater emphasis on outdoor activity comfort during daytime hours
The trend does not appear to be replacing traditional beach tourism, but rather adding alternative options within the summer travel market.
Impact on European hospitality
The shift in demand is influencing hospitality operators across different regions.
1.Northern Europe and Alpine regions
Hotels and tourism providers in Northern Europe and mountain destinations are reporting stronger summer interest. Some operators are expanding summer offerings, including outdoor recreation, wellness services, and nature-focused experiences. Several destinations historically associated with winter tourism are also positioning themselves more actively for summer demand.
2.Southern Europe
Hotels in Mediterranean destinations continue to see strong visitor volumes but are adapting to higher temperatures. Measures include upgrades to cooling systems, expanded shaded outdoor areas, increased indoor facilities, and adjusted schedules for excursions and activities during peak heat periods.
3.Seasonal adjustments in travel patterns
Alongside destination shifts, travel timing is also changing. A growing share of travelers is booking trips in May, June, September, or October rather than concentrating travel in July and August.
These shoulder-season months typically offer milder weather conditions while maintaining broad tourism accessibility. For hospitality operators, this has the effect of extending the operating season beyond traditional summer peaks.
Outlook
While Mediterranean destinations remain central to European tourism, recent data suggests that travelers are broadening their destination choices during periods of high summer temperatures. The hospitality industry is responding through adjustments in capacity planning, seasonal offerings, and operational measures aimed at managing higher temperatures and shifting demand patterns.
