Still thinking the best way to relax is to fly somewhere, check in, and do nothing? A new kind of holiday is taking a different approach. Some travellers are now travelling to seek challenging adventures, and Pinterest has given this emerging behaviour a name: Darecation.
It is a vacation built around adrenaline, physical challenge and achievement, where the activity itself is a central reason for the trip. Pinterest identified Darecations as one of its 2026 Pinterest Predicts trends, with search data showing growing interest in experiences associated with challenge and adventure. Searches for adventure tourism rose 75%, while auto racing events increased 85%. Searches for adrenaline rush aesthetics rose 50%, river rafting 35%, and football tournaments 50%.
There are also signs that this interest is moving beyond online searches. The BBC, citing SportsCover Direct, reported a 182% increase over two years in travellers purchasing sports travel insurance, suggesting that more people are travelling specifically to participate in physically demanding activities during a holiday.
For hospitality, if the activity is the reason for the trip, the hotel has an opportunity to support the guest before, during and after the challenge.
Before — Help me prepare. The guest journey can begin well before arrival, with information about routes, weather, equipment, nutrition, transportation and local activities. The hotel is helping guests prepare for what they come to accomplish.
Arrival — Help me get ready. The arrival experience can be designed around preparation. An active-travel concierge, equipment storage, early breakfast options, laundry and access to local guides can remove practical friction and give guests confidence before they set out.
The room itself can also be a performance and recovery environment. Good sleep, hydration, equipment storage, drying space and recovery amenities may matter more to an active traveller. After a demanding day, the experience can continue through nutritious food, wellness treatments and spaces designed for recovery.
Darecation therefore points to a broader trend in hospitality, from selling a place to stay to helping guests accomplish something behind the journey.
