Let me paint a painfully familiar picture:

We’ve got hotels who…

✔️ Haggle over €20 in rate optimization software… but happily discount rooms by €50 “just to get pick-up.”

✔️ Say no to onboarding support to “save budget”… then burn 60 hours in internal meetings trying to figure out why the forecast broke.

✔️ Reject an upsell tool because of the commission fee… while leaving $10,000 a month in upgrade revenue on the table.

✔️ Love spreadsheets because “we know how to use them”… yet make multi-million decisions on a tool after a 15-minute demo.

✔️ Reject software because it only does 99% of what they want… but spend a year “still looking” because nothing is perfect—so you built it yourself in Excel with the intern.

That, my friends, is penny wise, pound-foolish revenue management.

The Irony?

We chase cents with a microscope… And ignore thousands in missed opportunity with a shrug.

Oh, we don’t need training, we’ve used another RMS before. Of course, and I’ve used a treadmill before, but you don’t see me running a marathon.

Examples That Haunt Me:

  • Rejecting a 1% uplift tool because “it’s not in the budget” meanwhile, you’re running a 10% discount on all OTA channels for “visibility.”
  • Building dashboards in excel in house that nobody uses because the formulas are broken and the color coding causes migraines.
  • Saying no to automation because “we like manual control” hence we "build spreadsheets"

The Smart Revenue Play?

It’s not about spending wildly. It’s about investing with intent.

Ask yourself:

✅ Will this tool save time andincrease revenue?

✅ Does this process actually create value?

✅ Am I saying “no” because of cost or because I don’t understand the ROI?

If the answer is the latter, you’re not protecting margin ... you’re protecting status quo.

And in 2025, status quo is a revenue killer.

Final Thought?

Hotels don’t lose money because of big spend. They lose money because they protect small budgets and ignore big wins.

I totally get it...sometimes the ROI might be a bit wishy washy. Sometimes you might not get what you want 100%. And yes, life gets in the way of things. I get it...BUT...don't be stupid. Get over yourself, take a risk and you know what....it will work out right

It is estimated that 80+% of hotels do not use sophisticated revenue tools. Not sure about you but I think that’s a problem. It’s time we tried a different approach. We believe everyone deserves the chance to a fair fight. Regardless if they have 20 rooms or 200, branded or independent, primary or secondary location, have dedicated revenue managers or are a one man show. We believe that hiding behind the “users” in-ability is not good enough.
