ChatGPT Ads Give Distinctive Hotels a New Place to Be Discovered

A marketing consultant outlines how lifestyle and luxury hotels can use ChatGPT Ads, now live in 31 European markets, to reach travellers during the planning phase before a hotel search begins.

A traveller describes a few days in Paris: contemporary art, a neighbourhood worth exploring on foot, and a restaurant that feels part of the city. They have a clear idea of the experience they want, but have yet to choose where to stay.

ChatGPT Ads allows hotels to advertise during this planning process. The traveller may already have described preferences that a property can meet, without having searched for it by name.

By comparison, Google Search Ads often reaches travellers with an explicit request, such as “hotel in Paris”. Social advertising can introduce a property before someone has started looking, through imagery and messages relevant to their interests. ChatGPT Ads can appear across both situations: someone might be comparing hotels in a specific neighbourhood or still asking where to spend their summer holiday.

I am interested in what this could mean for lifestyle and high-end hospitality, where the choice often depends on a particular atmosphere, a location or an approach to service. How does advertising work in that setting, and what should a hotel consider before testing it?

Understand what your hotel is buying

OpenAI began testing ads in the United States on 9 February 2026. Ads can appear below a ChatGPT response, clearly labelled as sponsored and visually separated from the answer. They may be shown to users on Free and Go plans; Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu remain ad-free.

That separation matters. Paying for an ad does not give a hotel influence over ChatGPT’s recommendations or a higher position in its answers. The advertiser is buying a sponsored placement, rather than an endorsement from the assistant.

The advertising system considers several signals, including the conversation’s intent, the ad’s title and copy, its landing page, campaign settings and the advertiser’s additional context. Relevance and bids both contribute to the selection of eligible ads. Advertisers do not receive access to private chats.

For a hotel, this makes the connection between the message and the destination page particularly important. An ad about a culturally rich weekend should lead to a page that explains the neighbourhood, the hotel’s connection to it and the experience guests can actually book.

Give the hotel’s character a practical meaning

“Luxury hotel in Paris” gives the advertising system little information about why a property might suit someone planning a trip around art and local culture. In the ad copy and on the page it links to, the hotel could describe its proximity to independent galleries, its quiet setting or its restaurant’s connection to neighbourhood life, provided these reflect the actual property. These details help the system assess the ad’s relevance to the traveller’s plans and help the traveller understand whether the hotel suits them.

OpenAI allows advertisers to add context hints: short descriptions of an offering, the needs it serves or the situations in which it is useful. These hints help the system assess relevance. They are neither exact-match keywords nor instructions guaranteeing that an ad will appear in a particular conversation.

I would use that space to connect the hotel’s defining qualities to a reason for travelling. A coastal retreat might suit guests planning a few unhurried days with access to walking routes. A design hotel might be relevant to a city break centred on architecture. The same property can support different messages, but each needs a credible link to the experience on offer.

This approach rewards precise language. OpenAI recommends clear, specific copy that explains practical value, alongside distinct variations that introduce different angles. For a high-end brand, that need not mean abandoning atmosphere. It means giving the atmosphere enough substance for someone to decide whether it suits their stay.

Read the early results carefully

The American launch provides a starting point, not a mature hospitality benchmark. The platform has moved beyond its initial pilot, but OpenAI still describes Ads Manager as a beta and says there are no performance benchmarks across advertisers, industries or campaign types.

A recent hotel example is Radisson, which combines sponsored campaigns with a branded search plugin in ChatGPT. Its ads launched in July and subsequently expanded into additional markets, including Europe. The case illustrates how paid visibility can sit alongside an interactive hotel discovery experience.

Its figures require careful reading. OpenAI reports that the Radisson plugin’s booking conversion rate was approximately 1.5 times that of organic search in July and August 2026. That result belongs to the plugin, not the ads. For the sponsored campaigns, 54% of recorded checkout and booking events were attributed to ad views. View-through attribution records an association after exposure; it does not, on its own, establish that those bookings were caused by the ads or would not have happened otherwise.

These are results published by the platform in collaboration with a client, rather than an independent benchmark for boutique hotels. I would take them as a reason to investigate the channel and design a measured test, while keeping expectations specific to the property.

Europe is already part of the rollout

Hoteliers across the region no longer need to wait to start testing ChatGPT Ads. Self-service access through Ads Manager has been available in 31 European markets since 31 August 2026.

There are regional differences. OpenAI says personalised ads are not initially available in the European Economic Area or Switzerland. A campaign aimed at French travellers should therefore not assume access to signals from their broader conversation history. The current conversation remains central to contextual relevance.

Hotels can choose campaign objectives for views, clicks or conversions. Conversion optimization still uses click- or impression-based billing; it is not a payment-per-booking model. For euro-billed accounts, daily budgets start at €15. OpenAI recommends monitoring performance and adjusting the budget over time as results emerge. Some new self-service accounts are initially restricted to advertising in their home country, so international eligibility needs checking before planning a campaign aimed at travellers abroad.

As we discuss budgets with our clients, two approaches are emerging. Some are reallocating part of their existing social advertising spend to test ChatGPT Ads. More often, they are planning an additional, dedicated budget.

The experience is also evolving. Sponsored Agents, announced in September, are being tested with selected US advertisers and let people begin a separate conversation with a business-sponsored agent after clicking an ad. A visual format announced on 5 October is scheduled to begin testing later in October in the US during image generation. It will remain separate from the image being created. Both are developments to watch.

AI platforms are taking different approaches to advertising. Anthropic has said Claude will remain ad-free. Google is developing advertising within AI Mode and AI Overviews in Search, with eligible campaigns including Performance Max providing access to these placements. These Search experiences should be distinguished from the standalone Gemini app.

Start with one experience worth discovering

I would begin with a focused test around one genuine reason to choose the hotel. A small number of messages can explore different aspects of that experience without turning the property into a collection of generic promises.

Choose a specific stay

Define the traveller’s need and the experience the hotel can deliver. A weekend built around local art is easier to explain and assess than a broad promise of an exceptional escape.

Make the next step feel continuous

Use copy, imagery and a destination page that tell the same story. Show the relevant rooms and experiences, explain practical details, and give guests a clear route to availability or a conversation with the team.

Agree how you will judge the test

Measure what happens after the click, including enquiries and completed bookings where tracking permits. Check whether those enquiries match what the hotel offers, and use recurring questions to identify details that need clarifying in the ad or on the landing page.

For me, the opportunity lies in making the hotel’s character useful at the moment a traveller is shaping a stay. The advertisement can introduce that character; the website and the team then need to carry the promise through.

If a traveller described their ideal stay without naming your hotel, which detail would make your property worth discovering?

At Influence Society, exploring new marketing channels is part of our ongoing work with clients. Since September, we have begun onboarding several hotel groups onto ChatGPT Ads. Competition among hospitality advertisers still appears limited in the markets we are exploring, giving brands room to test the channel and assess what it could contribute to their marketing.
