Hotel location has a significant effect on how tourists move around a destination, according to a research paper published by Professor Bob McKercher of the School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, graduate student Erica Ng and two co-authors. Using data collected in Hong Kong from global positioning system (GPS) loggers, the researchers show that "hotel location has a profound impact on tourist movements". The Schoolof Hoteland Tourism Management (SHTM) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) today (17 September) announced the findings of a study on "Enhancing the Role of the Travel Trade in Reducing Tourism's Carbon Footprint". The study found that though senior management and owners of travel agencies are aware of tourism's contribution to carbon emissions, the limited provision of carbon efficient products is hindering their frontline staff from promoting low carbon tourism to their clients.

Hong Kong hotels are facing a serious problem of overcapacity that is likely to become more severe over the coming years, according to Dr Henry Tsai of the School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM) and a co-researcher. In a recently published research paper the pair note that although there is consistently high demand for hotels in the city, demand forecasts indicate a significant shortfall in likely booking when compared to the rooms available. The failure to implement strategies to improve this situation, they suggest, will decrease the profitability of Hong Kong's hotels, and significantly increase their operational risks.
Hong Kong, which recently ranked 15th in the World Economic Forum Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Index 2013, received more than 12.7 million visitors in the first quarter of 2013, reflecting a 13.5% yearon-year (YOY) growth from 2012. The MainlandChinese market accounted for 74.6% of total visitor arrivals, which registered a YOY growth of 20.3%. The Russian market posted the second highest YOY growth of 22.5%, attributable to the Hong Kong Tourism Board's promotional efforts in the country.

A thief who pretended to be a guest at the luxury Peninsula hotel coolly tricked staff into opening a safe and escaped with HK$50,000 in foreign currency and valuables, police revealed. The man, a foreigner, approached the front desk of the hotel in Salisbury Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, at about 4am on Sunday, claiming to have lost his room key. The room number he gave was occupied by a French businessman, whose name and birth date he gave as proof of identity. The real guest and his wife were in bed in the room at the time.
