Women-only hotel floors have been around for some time but in Spain they're taking the concept even further with the country's first hotel that caters exclusively to women.

The four-star Som Dona hotel opened in the resort of Porto Cristo in Mallorca with 39 rooms catering to female-identifying customers over the age of 14. On announcing the project last year, Som Hotels president, Joan Enric Capellá said they saw a gap in the market that came from a "growing business trend focused on female audience". There are already specialised hotels like adults-only hotels, gay-friendly hotels and even hotels for vegans but Capellá said there was nothing in Spain to cater exclusively for women, despite the rise of female-only gyms and co-working spaces throughout the globe. It conducted a survey across the hotel chain and found that its customers liked the idea of a women-only hotel

Som Dona opened its doors in June and it promises a number of packages in the coming months that will focus on wellness, fitness, health and detox retreats, as well as packages that bring solo female travellers together to socialise and explore Mallorca's cultural offerings. There already is a big focus on wellness though with a spa offering a range of holistic treatments and a restaurant that focuses on cuisine which is described as "flavourful, healthy and sustainable."

Interior design was inspired by "feminine features", according to the website, which seems to mean a lot of pink as hotel images show a strong 'strawberries and cream' colour scheme running throughout the entire hotel.

Capellá confirmed that "most" of the hotel workers would be women, too. "We want the most employees possible to be women, of course respecting Spain's parity laws," he said. "One of our objectives is also to give a certain visibility to women doing traditionally masculine jobs."
