Following an extensive renovation, Parkhotel Mondschein is set to open its doors to guests in May 2022. With a wide range of culinary delights, a modern studio for body & mind, a dreamy pool, and perfectly harmonising design elements, the historic property in the South Tyrolean capital will be a magnet for visitors and locals alike.

Bolzano. Whether to rest and recharge or to move the office to another city for a few days - urban getaways are becoming increasingly popular. With its central location amid breathtaking mountains, the South Tyrolean capital of Bolzano is perfect for a change of scenery. At the newly renovated Parkhotel Mondschein, a historic institution in the bicultural city, guests can start the day with a refreshing yoga session before working off their to-do list by the pool or unwinding in the surrounding park. "It's important to us to offer the optimal conditions for a relaxing stay. Whether that includes rest and solitude or entertainment and good company, we leave it up to our guests. Depending on their mood, they can decide what their perfect Mondschein moment looks like," says the hotel's Host, Moritz Dissertori.

Storied architecture, subtle interiors

Even at first glance, the listed building has a calming effect. The façade's iconic white shutters, the elegant stucco decorations, and majestic palm trees immediately transport guests into an oasis of calm. The interiors, too, radiate mid-century splendour, designed with great attention to detail by Merano-based interior design firm Biquadra, led by Christiana Biasi-von Berg. Shades of green, grey, and brown in the hotel's colour scheme match the mountainous backdrop, which can be admired from the windows. In designing the 76 rooms, emphasis was placed on minimalism and subtle elegance in the highest quality. "Beautiful materials, good quality, and intelligent design were top priorities. We wanted to create a place where people could come to rest and take time out. It doesn't require much, but what's there needs to be top-notch," says Moritz Dissertori, Host at Hotel Mondschein. The building's architectural features, originally built in 1330 and expanded in 1860 in the Belle Époque style, have been preserved: wide corridors, high ceilings, and stucco decorations, even in the rooms, reflect the building's rich history.

To provide a contemporary contrast to the authentic retro design, two artists were commissioned to create artworks inspired by the property as part of an artist-in-residency programme. The works, which consist of paintings and photographs, will be distributed and installed throughout the premises by the artists themselves at the opening.

Culinary fireworks

Even a hotel called Mondschein knows that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. In the iconic Luna Bar, a popular hotspot with locals, the finest Italian coffee, hearty eggs benedict, yoghurt bowls with colourful fresh fruit, classic brioche pastries, and much more are served daily from 7-11 AM. To counter food waste and to reduce the hotel's environmental impact, buffets are replaced with an à la carte menu. "We prefer a well-curated breakfast menu with dishes that are easy on the eyes. This also lets us greet guests with a smile in the morning and accompany their start to the day," says Host Moritz Dissertori. For small bites, Luna Bar offers a snack menu with regional appetisers from noon. The drinks menu includes classic coffee specialities, healthy smoothies and juices, homemade sodas, as well as select wines and classic cocktails that have made the bar a fixture in Bolzano's nightlife.

Perfectly in sync

Breathing in Bolzano's pure mountain has a very cleansing and calming effect. But a yoga session in the in-house studio Arise deepens the experience further. The publicly accessible space is geared towards relaxing and regenerating body and soul. Working together with various practitioners, the studio offers a variety of yoga and Qigong classes. Soon, Arise will begin hosting workshops, rituals, and events on the regular, like the one called 'Inner Garden'.

Guests who don't want to forgo their workout routine while on vacation can make the most of the fully equipped gym. The new garden pool invites leisurely laps with a view of the mountains, or a relaxing cool off. On colder days, guests can switch off in the sauna, detoxify, and let go of any troubles. Whatever the heart desires, life is a whole lot sweeter at Parkhotel Mondschein.
