Set in the storied heart of George Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Soori Penang, which is scheduled to open in January 2026, is a rare restoration project that redefines boutique luxury through memory, craftsmanship, and cultural reverence. Conceived by renowned architect Soo K. Chan, founder of SCDA Architect, who was born and raised within these very shophouses, this new landmark is both a personal homecoming and a bold architectural statement rooted in Penang's layered heritage. Soori Penang will also be the sibling property to the award-winning Soori Bali, the flagship resort that launched the Soori Collection and set the standard for its design-driven, culturally rooted approach to hospitality.

Once the family clan house of the Khoo family, Soori Penang brings together 15 intricately restored heritage shophouses, transformed into a luxury boutique hotel with expansive one- to three-bedroom suites. The original architectural features have been lovingly preserved, while the interiors pay homage to local traditions—subtle motifs from the famed and ornate Khoo Kongsi temple, carved stone reminiscent of guardian lions, and the gentle glimmer of onyx lanterns. These spaces breathe with the spirit of old Penang, reimagined through a contemporary lens.

Each suite is a study in detail, with custom-designed furniture, artisan-made accessories, and atmospheric light that dances through air wells and latticed shutters. A tranquil inner courtyard with a reflective pool captures the quiet magic of monsoon rains, while bespoke elements such as contemporary stone fountains reinterpret traditional rice grinders.

Complementing the exquisite design are curated experiences that connect guests with Penang's culinary, artistic, and cultural heartbeat. Each street hums with stories, each aroma carries a legacy, and every burst of color paints a picture of a destination unlike any other. It is a place that invites discovery, a celebration of its past, and a vision for its future rewarding those who take the time to uncover its secrets. With cultural advisors on hand to craft tailored itineraries, guests can explore the island's hidden gems and long-held traditions. Exclusive access to the iconic Khoo Kongsi Temple offers a rare, immersive insight into the living culture of George Town.

Soori Penang also features a wellness spa, a fitness room, and will debut with two food and beverage venues serving local classics, either in-room, at the lounge, in the shaded courtyard, or the café. Two more Cannon Square-facing outlets will follow in its second year.

Joining the globally celebrated Soori family alongside Soori Bali and the upcoming Soori Ubud, Soori Penang stands as a testament to the brand's ethos: authentic experiences shaped by place, people, and design. We invite global travelers to experience Penang not as tourists, but as adopted locals, wrapped in history, embraced by culture, and inspired by architecture.
