After half a century away from the hospitality scene, one of Spain's most storied hotels is welcoming guests once again. Gran Hotel Taoro, widely regarded as the region's first grand luxury hotel, has officially reopened in Puerto de la Cruz, in the north of Tenerife, following a meticulous three year restoration.

First inaugurated in 1890, the property has played an important role in the island's tourism history. Now reborn as an elegant five star retreat, the renewed Gran Hotel Taoro blends its original architectural character with a contemporary aesthetic aimed at today's luxury traveller. The reopening marks the first time in 50 years that the building has operated as a hotel, signalling both a return to its roots and a new chapter for high end hospitality in Puerto de la Cruz.

The restored hotel features 199 rooms and suites, including four presidential suites, many of them offering sweeping views over Mount Teide, the Atlantic Ocean and the surrounding botanical gardens. The interiors have been designed to respect the building's heritage while introducing a refined, modern comfort and a strong sense of place.

Gastronomy is a central pillar of the repositioned Gran Hotel Taoro. The property now offers six food and beverage venues, open both to resident guests and local visitors. Among them are OKA, a Japanese fine dining concept; LAVA, an intimate chef's counter with limited seating; and Amular, a gourmet bistro inspired by the four natural elements, reflecting the island's volcanic landscapes and Atlantic setting. Together, the venues are intended to establish the hotel as a culinary destination in its own right.

Wellbeing also sits at the heart of the relaunch. The Sandára Wellness Centre, developed in partnership with Paris based brand Anne Semonin, will offer a comprehensive spa, treatment and wellness experience rooted in holistic health. Guests will have access to tailored therapies and rituals designed around relaxation, rejuvenation and overall balance.

Beyond the spa, leisure facilities include three heated swimming pools, a fully equipped TechnoGym fitness centre and generous outdoor terraces that make the most of Tenerife's year round mild climate. The aim is to create a resort style environment while maintaining the intimacy and service standards associated with a classic grand hotel.

To deepen the connection with the destination, Gran Hotel Taoro is introducing X-Plora, an exclusive concierge led service focused on curated experiences. Through X-Plora, guests will be able to access highly tailored, authentic activities, from cultural encounters and nature excursions to bespoke itineraries that highlight the character of northern Tenerife. Each experience is designed to be personalised, emphasising discovery and a sense of place rather than generic excursions.
