Davenport Hotel Unveils Latest Milestone in Multi-Year Renovation, Establishing New Legacy for the Historic Hotel and Downtown Spokane
The Davenport Hotel, one of the West’s first luxury hotels, celebrates the completion of refreshed guest rooms as part of its multi-year, multi-phase renovation, which artfully pay homage to the hotel’s rich history. Following the arrival of a new Lobby Bar and Emporium in 2025, the reimagined guestrooms herald a new era for the hotel’s longstanding legacy as a hospitality landmark in downtown Spokane and a defining icon of the Great American West.
Louis Davenport first opened the Davenport Hotel in 1914 as Spokane rose into a booming commercial hub in the Inland Northwest and the hotel quickly became the social heart of the city. Originally designed by architect Kirtland Cutter, the Davenport was modeled after the grand hotels of Europe and paved the way for modern amenities in American hospitality. It was among the earliest hotels in the United States to feature technological marvels such as air conditioning, a central vacuum system, housekeeping carts, accordion doors in its ornate ballrooms, and even a pipe organ. More than a century later, the historic hotel still serves as a beacon of hospitality in downtown Spokane, propelled by the new additions that bring fresh offerings to today’s travelers while honoring its storied character.
Los Angeles-based design firm Bishop Pass reimagined Davenport Hotel's 284 guest rooms for the 21st century while spotlighting iconic architectural elements. The result is a curated space that layers both historic and new design elements to make the guest rooms feel like a real home, a place that has been lived in and has evolved with the time. To complement the original wood furniture, including the headboards and case pieces, design draws inspiration from Spokane’s natural beauty to bring a soft and natural light into the rooms. Botanical textiles and hints of lilac are a nod to Spokane’s recognition as the Lilac City, as the fragrant flower thrives in its Pacific Northwest climate. Davenport’s past lives on in new throw pillows, which feature a pattern adapted from a tapestry that was traditionally displayed in the hotel, with pops of deep green referencing the native ponderosa pine trees. The lounge chairs are a modernized interpretation of the cabinet makers chair – a signature style hotel guests would have rested upon in the 1940s.
The first phase of renovations kicked off in 2024 with the debut of new dining offerings in the magnificent Spanish architecture-inspired lobby, which is fondly referred to as “Spokane’s Living Room.” Designed around the lobby’s historical light posts, the Lobby Bar pays homage to Davenport Hotel’s 1920’s Prohibition heritage, with timeless light bites and craft cocktails, such as its signature Martini cocktail, prepared extra dirty with homemade hand-stuffed blue cheese olives. Emporium, a specialty retail space and café, features a custom marble slab where guests can view demonstrations of the famous Davenport Soft Peanut Brittle, hand-made fresh daily by the hotel’s in-house confectionary team and a first for the hotel.
The Davenport Hotel’s guest room renovations arrive alongside broader updates across Davenport Hotels. The Davenport Tower, uniquely inspired by the developer’s safari travels, is also debuting a refreshed lobby and guestrooms this spring. Bishop Pass reinterpreted the hotel's original theme through the lens of the African grasslands, introducing botanical and grass patterns, caned textures and layered neutrals to subtly invoke the Serengeti influences. The collection also opened The Louie, a Davenport Hotel in 2025, a 48-key boutique hotel inspired by the residences of Louis Davenport, who lived in the building prior to overseeing the construction of the legendary Davenport Hotel, located just across the street. Together, the three properties create a distinct but connected experience in downtown Spokane, anchored by the Davenport Hotel as its centerpiece.
