Pemako Thimphu
Pemako Hotels Announce Full-Scale Renovation of Pemako Thimphu
As part of an extensive transformation led by internationally renowned design firm P49 Design — whose portfolio spans some of the world's leading luxury hospitality projects across Asia, Africa and the Pacific — Pemako Thimphu, part of Bhutan's first locally owned and operated luxury hotel group, is entering a new era. Set for completion by the end of 2027, the full-scale renovation will see the hotel's guestrooms and public spaces thoughtfully reimagined through a contemporary lens, while remaining deeply rooted in the rich cultural identity and spirit of Bhutan.
The project is a complete reimagining of the hotel in the heart of the capital — introducing lighter materials, bespoke furnishings, and refined finishes to create a fresher, more contemporary guest experience within the building's striking, classical dzong-inspired fortress-like exterior. Guestrooms are being fully redesigned, including new bathrooms featuring bathtubs and vanities, and updated furniture, with calm, functional interiors that balance comfort and modern expectations. Across public areas — from the lobby to the dining and bar spaces, including The Thongsel, Chig Ja Gye and the Ara Bar — bespoke design will be interwoven with Bhutan's cultural essence.
The new concept draws intimately from Bhutan's rich artistic and spiritual heritage, subtly incorporating intricate textile patterns, traditional wood carvings, vibrant local craftsmanship and curated artworks throughout the interiors. These cultural references are delicately reinterpreted within a modern design, appearing across upholstered fabrics, headboard detailing and bespoke furniture to create spaces that feel both sophisticated and culturally resonant.
Together with sister property Pemako Punakha — Bhutan's first luxury tented resort — the redesigned Pemako Thimphu will continue to embody Pemako Hotels' vision of creating meaningful destinations that celebrate the soul of Bhutan through timeless luxury and thoughtful design. Deep in the spiritual heartland of Bhutan's Punakha Valley, Pemako Punakha comprises 21 tented villas set within 60 acres of Himalayan wilderness, conceptually designed by acclaimed American landscape architect and interior designer Bill Bensley, with interiors that draw deeply from local culture. The design palette features the yellow, white, and orange of the national flag, contrasted with black-hued tones reminiscent of highland tents, while furnishings pay homage to ancient Dzong architecture — the distinctive fortress-monasteries found throughout Bhutan.
Hidden along the Mo Chhu River, the retreat offers an immersive arrival experience via a prayer-flag-lined bridge and traditional welcome ritual, setting the tone for a sanctuary rooted in nature, culture and quiet reflection since opening in September 2023. Every corner reflects thoughtful craftsmanship and tradition, from Bhutanese motifs and prayer art to curated cultural touches such as The Bhutanese Guide to Heritage placed by every bed. Each villa — including a two-bedroom family option and a presidential suite — features a private temperature-controlled pool, a first for accommodation in Bhutan, and expansive outdoor living spaces overlooking the river.
Pemako Hotels' vision for design is rooted in the meaning of Pemako itself, which translates to "the hidden lotus land" and refers to a fabled Tibetan beyul believed to be reached through a sacred waterfall. Extending this philosophy, Pemako Hotels has also announced a third property in Paro, set to open in 2029. Designed in partnership with Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), it will further expand the brand's unique presence across Bhutan's key destinations.
