Kilchoan Estate by Dunton
Kilchoan Estate by Dunton Officially Opens in the Scottish Highlands
Today, Dunton celebrates the official opening of Kilchoan Estate by Dunton, the brand's first European property and a significant milestone in its collection of intimate luxury retreats. Spanning 13,000 acres between Loch Nevis and Loch Hourn, the newly restored estate offers year-round access to one of the most remote and spectacular landscapes in the Scottish Highlands, reached only by boat or on foot.
Kilchoan Estate's history stretches back centuries, with ownership traced to the 12th century. Shaped by clan traditions, agricultural life, and the lasting legacy of the Highland Clearances, the land has long occupied an important place in the story of Scotland's west coast. Following its acquisition by Katrin and Christoph Henkel, the estate underwent a thoughtful restoration that preserved its architectural character and cultural heritage while preparing it for a new chapter as an immersive hospitality destination. Their vision echoes the philosophy behind Dunton Hot Springs in Colorado: protect historic places while inviting guests to experience them in meaningful ways.
Now open to guests, Kilchoan Estate features five meticulously restored stone and timber cottages ranging from two to five bedrooms, each redesigned by London-based Waldo Works, the acclaimed studio behind the recent restoration work at Dunton Hot Springs. Two additional cottages are expected to open in early 2027.
The estate's design reflects its Highland surroundings through the use of local stone, pine, and slate, complemented by interiors inspired by the textures and colors of the surrounding mountains, lochs, and coastline. Textiles from respected British and Irish makers including Bute, Mourne Textiles, and the Isle Mill combine with bespoke Scottish furnishings and carefully chosen European pieces to create spaces that feel both refined and deeply connected to their setting. Throughout the estate, artwork personally selected by owner Katrin Henkel adds individuality and character to each cottage.
Beyond the accommodations, guests can relax in the newly opened spa with its sauna and yoga studio, gather in The Long House for Dunton's signature communal dining experiences, or explore the surrounding wilderness through hiking, cycling, kayaking, and countless opportunities to experience the natural beauty of the Knoydart Peninsula.
A New Culinary Program Led by Chef Jamie Smart
The opening of Kilchoan Estate also marks the debut of an ambitious culinary program under newly appointed Chef Jamie Smart, whose ingredient-led philosophy celebrates the remarkable produce of the Scottish Highlands and surrounding seas.
Drawing inspiration from the estate's landscape and seasonal harvests, Chef Smart's menus highlight locally sourced seafood, wild game, foraged ingredients, and exceptional regional produce. Dishes may include Kilchoan smoked salmon with juniper and crème fraîche, hand-dived scallops with Knoydart laverbread, grilled venison saddle with carrots and pickled walnut, and desserts showcasing native fruits and botanicals.
Whether enjoyed in The Long House, packed as a gourmet picnic for a day's adventure, or presented as an intimate private dining experience, every meal reflects a profound connection to the land and Scotland's rich culinary traditions.
True to Dunton's philosophy of immersive travel, Kilchoan Estate offers experiences that showcase the peninsula's extraordinary landscapes and wildlife. Guests can embark on guided or self-guided mountain hikes, wild swimming excursions, sea kayaking adventures, coastal boat trips, and river or sea fishing expeditions. Wildlife encounters may include sightings of red deer, golden eagles, otters, seals, and an abundance of native marine life, while heritage walks reveal the region's cultural and ecological history.
As evening falls, some of Britain's darkest skies provide exceptional opportunities for stargazing, reinforcing Kilchoan's rare combination of remoteness, adventure, and Highland serenity.
In keeping with Dunton's commitment to responsible hospitality, the fossil fuel-free estate incorporates energy-efficient heating and cooling systems and infrastructure improvements that respect the integrity of its historic buildings. Partnerships with local organizations, including the Knoydart Foundation, help ensure that conservation, community engagement, and cultural preservation remain central to the estate's future.
