Cape Sounio

Following a carefully phased, $49 million multi-year renewal project completed in summer 2026, every aspect of the resort has been reimagined from its 139 rooms, bungalows, suites and villas to its restaurants, public spaces and an extraordinary new spa and wellness concept. 

Originally opened in 1968, Cape Sounio sits in one of the most strictly protected landscapes in Greece, overlooking the Temple of Poseidon. Since Grecotel assumed ownership in 2004, the resort has continually evolved to harmoniously become a part of the landscape while honouring its location overlooking one of the two most important temples in Ancient Greece. 

Surrounded by ancient pine forests, Cape Sounio has been thoughtfully transformed to exist in harmony with its environment. Here, the land came first, and the hotel was asked to defer to it. That is the doctrine on which the resort was founded, under Grecotel, and this year the property now completes a full reimagining that honours that doctrine rather than escaping it. The architecture has been reclad in natural stone that mirrors the surrounding earth tones, allowing the buildings to blend invisibly into the landscape, while extensive planting of indigenous flora has further immersed the bungalows and villas within the forest setting. Throughout the property, non-reflective glass now preserves uninterrupted views from the Temple of Poseidon, while walkways crafted from marble sourced from ancient quarries and local stone create an elegant connection between nature and history. 

The heart of the resort has been completely reimagined. The reception, lobby, salon and lobby bar now welcome guests with a sophisticated palette of crisp whites and soft greys, punctuated by sculptural furnishings and original Saridis Klismos chairs. Art and design now play a defining role throughout the resort, with an exceptional collection of works by celebrated French and Italian designers, including Gabriella Crespi, Maria Pergay, Roger Capron and Andrea Branzi, each inspired by the enduring legacy of Ancient Greece.  Guests are welcomed by an emotive two-piece installation by contemporary Greek artist Nefeli Massia, whilst sculptural works by the pioneering Greek kinetic artist TAKIS have found a permanent home within Cape Sounio.

Across the resort, all 139 accommodations have been comprehensively redesigned over three consecutive seasons. Every room, bungalow, suite and villa has been transformed with contemporary interiors, elevated materials and an understated design that frames uninterrupted views towards the Temple of Poseidon and the Aegean Sea. Arranged amphitheatrically around the resort's private cove, each accommodation embraces natural light while preserving an intimate connection with the surrounding protected landscape. Among the highlights is the newly reimagined Poseidon Villa, Cape Sounio's most exclusive accommodation with private car access. The villa has been refreshed as a contemporary sanctuary rooted in the landscape, with locally sourced Ligourio and Aliveri marble, designer furnishings, curated artwork and handcrafted details. Expansive outdoor living spaces include a raised marble infinity pool, shaded dining pavilion for up to twelve guests, outdoor gym facilities and couples treatment area. 

Cape Sounio's culinary offering has equally entered a new era. A striking new signature concept called Cape Sounio Restaurant occupies the upper floor of the main building, where terraces frame panoramic views of the Temple of Poseidon. Meanwhile, the newly introduced poolside Aegean Grill celebrates Greek family-style cuisine, showcasing seasonal ingredients sourced from the resort's gardens, in a state-of-the-art open-air kitchen and charcoal grill. 

Completing the transformation is the refreshed Cape Sounio Spã housed within a restored modernist landmark dating back to the resort's original 1960s architecture. The building reveals its dramatic octagonal concrete roof above a monumental marble and mosaic therapy pool crafted from Aliveri marble. Floor-to-ceiling glazing frames uninterrupted views of the Temple of Poseidon. Exposed concrete, expansive glass walls and copper detailing are complemented by handcrafted leather furnishings, natural horn accents, precious minerals and palaeontological artefacts that celebrate the site's extraordinary history. New outdoor wellness terraces suspended within the landscape feature yoga and Pilates decks, relaxation spaces and a state-of-the-art open-air gym among sacred olive trees. 

The Spã is home to Elevations of Wellness, the innovative holistic programme created by Vicky Vlachonis, the globally-renowned visionary wellness expert, osteopath and Gwyneth Paltrow’s go-to healer. Now in its second year, the programme is inspired by the restorative power of the resort's extraordinary natural setting and sacred energy of the Temple of Poseidon, and combines personalised wellness journeys with movement, mindfulness, nutrition and advanced therapies tailored to each guest's individual goals. New additions this year include 13 Full Moon Rituals tailored to the moon’s unique energy, combining yoga, breathwork, guided laughter and meditative swims in the Aegean at the new Spã Beach, a private cove beneath the spa and reachable only through it, for a rare, immersive reset.
