Over the decades, the building's uses shifted, yet its spirit never faded. Audiovisual studios followed the workshops. But something endured: a certain idea of work well done, a care for materials, an elegance that never needs to announce itself.

A house before a hotel

Maison Honnel does not seek to impress. It prefers to move you.

At a time when the hospitality industry swings between bold spectacle and surface-level minimalism, Maison Honnel chooses a third path: that of a place truly lived in, a house that feels as though it had always been there. Its 41 rooms and suites share that rare quality of feeling as though they have always existed, with their natural materials, precise joinery, textiles that invite the touch, and a soft light that never intrudes.

The experience is built around a feeling as rare as it is simple: that of being welcomed into a place with a soul. No showy hotel conventions, no theatrics. The architectural language: restraint, material, permanence

Laune Architecture is a Paris-based firm whose work is recognised precisely by its refusal to draw attention to itself. No ostentatious signature, no decorative stance that dates badly. A restrained, timeless grammar, built on the conviction that the most beautiful spaces are those that cannot be dated at all.

For Maison Honnel, the brief was simple to state, demanding to honour: reveal the place rather than transform it. Work with what already exists — the proportions, the light, the structure — and layer onto it materials that endure, lines that soothe, details that only reveal themselves on approach. Natural wood as a guiding thread, mineral surfaces that bring a sense of freshness, a palette drawn from paper and mother-of-pearl that leaves room to breathe.

The result is a sensation rarely felt in a hotel: that the space has always been this way. That nothing was added to persuade. That everything was already there, simply waiting to be brought back into the light.

The rooms

Maison Honnel offers 41 rooms and suites spread across several floors. Each was designed to evoke the feeling of a lived-in Parisian home, deliberately at odds with the conventions of the standard hotel room.

The materials are natural, the volumes carefully proportioned, the light crafted to stay soft and never harsh. Bespoke joinery, furniture selected piece by piece, textiles that invite the touch: nothing here is standardised, yet everything holds together.

The care given to sleep quality, insulation and the choice of textiles reflects a design approach rooted in use rather than aesthetics. Aesthetics simply follow as a natural consequence.

Each room includes an integrated dressing area, a bathroom finished entirely in refined materials, and, in the higher categories, a dedicated sitting area. The distinction between room types lies in surface area and orientation, rather than in ostentatious design codes.

The living spaces

Carlo Trattoria and pizzeria

On the ground floor, Carlo pays tribute to the Italian roots of Carlo Honnel, the tailor who once crossed the Alps. This is no hotel restaurant: it is a trattoria in its own right, opening onto Rue de Surène, with its own identity, its own codes, its own clientele. It's a weekday lunch spot people come to whether or not they're staying at the hotel. As evening falls, the address shifts pace: rather than opening for dinner, it invites guests to linger over an Aperitivo in a more intimate atmosphere.

Carlo embodies a vision of dining the times call for: generous, sincere, rooted in tradition without ever tipping into pastiche. Fresh pasta, wood-fired pizzas, fish and meat prepared with care, a thoughtfully chosen wine list. The main dining room, accessible from Rue de Surène, is complemented by a second room with its own dedicated reception. Mangia bene, vivi meglio.

The set design carries through the world of Maison Honnel while asserting a personality all its own: a green marble façade, burgundy-and-white striped awnings, plates with a red gingham rim, embroidered napkins, letterpress coasters. Every detail tells a story.

The bar: aperitivo

Every weekday evening, the bar at Maison Honnel comes alive with the Aperitivo, that Milanese ritual Carlo himself might once have practised. From 6pm, time seems to pause. The cocktails are carefully crafted, the atmosphere hushed, the light amber-toned. An elegant, thoughtfully composed selection accompanies the moment, in a spirit both sociable and refined.

The bar occupies a generous space on the ground floor, designed to welcome residents and neighbourhood regulars alike. The Aperitivo at Maison Honnel is not entertainment: it is an invitation to slow down.

The Wine Room — private salon

The Wine Room is Maison Honnel's most intimate salon. A private table for up to six, softly dimmed lighting: the space is designed for business meals that deserve quiet, intimate dinners, the kind of conversations that have no place in an ordinary restaurant. Advance reservation required.

Wellness

On the lower level of Maison Honnel, far from the bustle of Rue de Surène, an entire space has been designed around wellness. No overblown promises, no oversized space: three spaces, three offerings, a single philosophy of care conceived on a human scale. The space is run in partnership with Monmasseur, offering guests access to premium wellness treatments.

The treatment room

The private treatment room offers massages and facials in a fully dedicated setting. Designed for focus and privacy, it runs on a simple principle: one person, one practitioner, one purpose. The treatments on offer adapt to the time available and the needs of the moment, whether that means an hour of recovery at the start of a stay or a deeper session before dinner. The treatment room can be booked through the hotel reception.

The sauna

Maison Honnel's traditional sauna carries forward what the House stands for: simple pleasure, done properly, without pretence. Pale wood, warmth, undisturbed silence. A space to enjoy alone or with someone else, before or after a workout, alongside a massage, or simply because the day calls for it.

The fitness space

The fitness space is designed for those who maintain a regular workout routine while travelling, and who know that the quality of the equipment makes all the difference. Cardio, strength training, functional training: the equipment covers the needs of a complete workout. A way of training that mirrors the way one rises in the morning: unhurried, at one's own pace.
