Torel Private Collection Opens This Summer as Porto’s Newest 5-Star Art Refuge
In the historic heart of Porto, with a privileged location overlooking the Douro River, Torel Private Collection reinvents the very notion of conventional hospitality. Conceived as a private residence, art permeates everyday life across its rooms, suites, and intimate salons, shaping guest experiences with bespoke furniture and iconic works by acclaimed international artists.
Housed in a late 19th-century building, this former hotel has been given a new life under the Torel Boutiques group. The five-star, adults-only property features 16 rooms and suites, a private art collection carefully curated across its floors, and KANJIRU—a new Japanese fine dining restaurant.
Designed as a true urban oasis where the greatest luxury is absolute seclusion paired with a captivating trove of artworks, Torel Private Collection offers an intimate living gallery experience for guests seeking maximum privacy or complete venue exclusivity. A Living Gallery
Torel Private Collection offers a tailored experience of discreet luxury, where time slows down and attention turns to the details. The project is rooted in the collection of the building’s owner, an avid art collector with more than 300 original works. Around 30 to 40 pieces are displayed at any given time throughout the hotel, following an ever-changing display that invites discovery with every visit.
Beyond the future art gallery on floor -4, which will house part of the owner’s collection as well as temporary exhibitions, the artistic presence extends into every moment of the stay. André Butzer, Ângelo de Sousa, Anselm Kiefer, Armanda Passos, Bosco Sodi, Dan Rees, Günther Förg, Helena Almeida, João Maria Gusmão and Pedro Paiva, José Pedro Croft, Joris Van de Moortel, Julian Opie, Julião Sarmento, Kehinde Wiley, Mickalene Thomas, Pedro Barateiro, Pedro Cabrita Reis, Rui Chafes, Vasco Araújo, and Takashi Murakami are some of the artists whose works will appear throughout the hotel and in the gallery—an eclectic, diverse selection that reflects the contemporary character of Torel Private Collection in its relationship with art.
Concept Rooms: A Collection of 16 States of Mind
All rooms start from a shared, elegant and contemporary foundation, with a strong emphasis on natural light, textures, and the integration of original artworks. Yet each one has its own character, inspired by different states of mind. The room collection comprises 16 concept—Onírico, Minimal, Conceptual, Introspetivo, Naif, Sensorial, Contemporâneo, Subtil, Etéreo, Imersivo, Disruptivo and Provocador—the last two, both located on floor -3, offer a more exclusive experience, one featuring a bathtub and the other a jacuzzi facing the river, creating the sensation of being immersed in the landscape.
KANJIRU: An Intimate Omakase over the Douro
On floor -2, you’ll find KANJIRU, a Japanese restaurant whose concept was developed entirely by Vitor Matos, the most highly awarded Portuguese chef in the Michelin guide. Together with chef João Rocha, who leads the daily operation of the project, it promises to bring a distinctly sensorial interpretation of Japanese cuisine in an omakase format, grounded in a shared vision of rigour, sensitivity, and precision.
Created by Isabel Sá Nogueira, the space is arranged around a large, custom-made counter, with no traditional tables, where 22 seats are aligned to observe the meticulous dance of the chefs in an immersive gastronomic experience with strong interaction between guests and the team. All guests can choose from two available omakase menus, priced at €155 or €220 per person. To complete the experience, the team recommends one of several possible pairings, while guests also have access to a broad selection of drinks, including wines and signature cocktails, with and without alcohol.
