Vestige Xaudum

Perched on a Kalahari sand dune overlooking an ancient fossil riverbed, Vestige Xaudum will be the only lodge within Khaudum National Park, one of Africa’s least-visited wilderness areas. Fewer than 3,000 people visit the park each year, offering a rare sense of space and solitude and the opportunity to experience a landscape where nature sets the pace. Covering more than 3,800 km², Khaudum forms part of the vast Kavango–Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA), with wildlife moving freely between the park and neighbouring Botswana. The region is renowned for its migratory elephant herds and important population of endangered African wild dogs, alongside lion, leopard, cheetah and roan antelope, with more than 300 bird species soaring overhead. 

A Bold Approach to Safari Design 

Vestige Estudio, the collection’s in-house design studio, has shaped the architecture and interiors of Vestige Xaudum, substantially redesigning and enlarging the suites, and conceiving an entirely new main lodge. Bold, sculptural forms respond to the landscape, framing views across the ancient riverbed, while natural materials and a palette reflecting the colours of the Kalahari, ground the contemporary design in its setting. Local sourcing and craftsmanship are integral to the lodge. Thatch has been sourced from villages surrounding Khaudum, while much of the construction has been undertaken by skilled local craftspeople, whose knowledge and craftsmanship bring a distinctly local character to its contemporary architecture. 

With just six suites, space and privacy are central to the guest experience. Five one-bedroom suites each afford spacious indoor and outdoor living, while the two-bedroom suite offers four private decks and a plunge pool. At the heart of Vestige Xaudum, shared spaces for dining and relaxation are complemented by a spa, open-air fitness deck and 78m² swimming pool overlooking the wilderness. The culinary approach at Vestige Xaudum will be relaxed and rooted in its Namibian setting, with much of the meat and fresh produce sourced within the country. Fire is at the heart of the dining experience, with dishes prepared over the spit-braai, while a six-course dinner combines individually plated dishes with a generous family-style main course. Guests can choose to dine privately or with others, inside or outside on Vestige Xaudum’s decks. 

Letting Nature Set the Pace 

At Vestige Xaudum, safari will be shaped less by a fixed itinerary than by what nature presents each day. Private guides and specialist vehicles allow guests the freedom to respond to recent wildlife movements and their own interests: changing direction because lions have been heard nearby, lingering over an elephant herd or whiling away the afternoon observing Khaudum’s extraordinary birdlife. Game drives can be complemented by bush breakfasts, guided walks outside the National Park and stargazing, offering insight into the wildlife, landscape, and the traditional tales and skills of Northern Namibia. With few other vehicles, almost no artificial light and vast expanses of wilderness, Vestige Xaudum offers something increasingly difficult to find: space, silence and the opportunity to experience nature without distraction. 

Conservation, Community & Connection 

Most of the Vestige Xaudum team has been recruited from the neighbouring Muduva Nyangana and George Mukoya Conservancies. Before opening, new recruits will undertake three months of residential hospitality training, followed by further specialist training and mentoring at Vestige Xaudum. The programme is designed to build skills, confidence and experience that can support long-term careers in hospitality. Vestige Namibia will work alongside Namibia’s Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism, park management and neighbouring conservancies, supporting locally identified conservation priorities. Wildlife monitoring will be an important focus from the outset, helping to protect Khaudum’s landscapes and wildlife for future generations. Vestige Xaudum has been designed to operate with a light footprint in its remote setting, including an on-site solar energy system with battery storage and carefully managed borehole water. 

The First Chapter of Vestige Namibia 

Vestige Xaudum will be the first of four distinctive lodges forming a new Vestige circuit through northern Namibia. It will be followed by Vestige Sorris Sorris, Vestige Omatendeka and Vestige Sheya Shuushona, opening one by one as the collection takes shape. Each will offer a different encounter with Namibia, with bold, original architecture reflecting its individual setting. Together, the four lodges will take guests through contrasting landscapes and ecosystems, while sharing Vestige’s approach to highly personal hospitality and experiences that deepen their understanding of each place, its people and wildlife.
