Prior to his appointment Van der Merwe worked as a group human resource manager where he was responsible for the complete human resources function and development, after which he joined Rotana as an assistant director of human resources in Beach Rotana, Abu Dhabi.Van der Merwe has worked in human resources for several companies, as well as educational institutions in South Africa, throughout his career. In addition to holding various accreditations and certificates, he received his B.A. degree in humanities as well as a B.A. honours degree in development and management which he passed Cum Laude from the North West University, South Africa. He also earned an executive diploma in labour relations from the Potchefstroom Business School, South Africa in 2007, after which he was invited to deliver his thesis during the annual SA Symposium for Arts and Science in South Africa.
