Selkirk, New York | Accor North America, Business and Leisure hotels have just doubled their environmental commitment making it that much easier for travelers to lighten their environmental footprint with the Audubon Green Leaf Eco-Rating Program. Accor now has 11 American properties to match the 11 Canadian properties already in the Program.
Created by Audubon International and TerraChoice Environmental Marketing, the Audubon Green Leaf™ Eco-Rating Program’s survey is a valuable tool for hotels to assess their level of eco-efficiency. Based on their completed survey, verified by TerraChoice, the hotel is rewarded with an eco-rating of one to five Green Leafs and issued a report that provides encouragement for current efforts and recommendations on how to expand their success. The program also offers motivational and educational materials to encourage the hotel to work as a team in their goal towards environmental responsibility.
In their efforts to become more environmentally preferable some of the hotels have instituted new procedures, installed new technology and trained its staff to reduce, reuse and recycle, thus cutting down on the consumption of water, electricity and paper goods. By implementing certain initiatives, such as replacing putting dimmer switches and timers on lights, installing low-flow bathroom fixtures and dishwashers and using recycled paper for administrative documents, the hotel dramatically reduced waste.
“A commitment to lead in the next environmental movement is coming from organizations such as Accor,” states Kevin A. Fletcher, Director of Programs and Administration for Audubon International. “By truly ‘walking the walk’ and not just ‘talking the talk’ through the Audubon Green Leaf ™ Program, Accor’s senior management, staff, and in the end, Accor’s guests, are making a conscious choice to protect and sustain the land, water, wildlife, and natural resources around them. Like the actions they take through this program, the next great wave of environmental stewardship will come through partnership, action and measurable results–ultimately making environmental protection a part of everyday business.”
“We enthusiastically applaud Accor’s devotion to being environmentally responsible globally,” Kevin Gallagher, Vice-President for TerraChoice. “Every effort does make a difference and the Accor chain is clearly making a difference. Be it from their efforts to reduce energy-use, waste, or water to recycling these efforts are what make it easy for hotels to increase their triple bottom line and be an example for all.”
