Nearly 70% of Hospitality Sector Now Committed to Use Only Cage-Free Eggs, New Industry Report Finds

Lever Foundation's scorecard shows 69% of Thailand's hotel rooms are covered by cage-free egg commitments, with six groups already completed transitions.

Bangkok — The country’s hospitality sector has reached new heights in sustainable food sourcing, with a large majority of leading hotel groups now pledged to shift to sourcing only cage-free eggs for their food operations, according to a comprehensive new assessment released today by international NGO Lever Foundation. The 2025 Thailand Hospitality Industry Cage-Free Egg Scorecard evaluated over 50 of the largest hotel groups operating in the country, and found that 69% of hotel rooms—representing over 115,000 rooms—are now covered by pledges to source only cage-free eggs, which are more humane for animals and higher in food safety for guests.

The widespread adoption of cage-free egg commitments covering over two-thirds of Thailand's formal hospitality industry shows the sector’s recognition of animal welfare, food safety, and sustainability as critical business imperatives. With the majority of hotel rooms in major properties already committed to cage-free transitions, we're witnessing a transformation in how the hospitality sector approaches responsible sourcing. Lily Tse, Sustainability Program Director at Lever Foundation, which worked with a number of the hotel groups to help them develop their sourcing policies

Six hotel groups earned A ratings for having already completed their transitions to 100% cage-free egg sourcing in Thailand: Aman Resorts, Capella Hotel Group, COMO Hotels and Resorts, Mandarin Oriental, Raya Collection, and Soneva. COMO Metropolitan Bangkok, for example, successfully transitioned to 100% cage-free eggs ahead of the company's global 2026 target, while Capella completed its global transition by January 2025, ahead of its original end-of-2025 goal.

An additional 28 hotel groups have set global cage-free egg policies that will be fully implemented over the next several years. Companies that have set such policies include prominent domestic brands like Minor Hotels, Cape & Kantary Hotels, ONYX Hospitality Group, Banyan Tree Hotels & Resorts, Asset World Corporation, and Chatrium Hotels & Residences, as well as major international brands such as Accor, Hilton, Hyatt, Marriott, and InterContinental. Meanwhile, Shangri-La Thailand and SAii Hotels & Resorts have made country-specific commitments to source only cage-free eggs in Thailand within the next several years.

However, significant gaps remain. Twenty-three hotel groups representing 53,470 rooms—31% of hotel rooms evaluated—have not yet adopted any cage-free egg policy. Notable hospitality groups without commitments include Dusit International, Centara Hotels & Resorts, Grande Asset Hotels & Property, Grande Centre Point Hotels, Laguna Resorts and Hotels, and SALA Hospitality Group.

With the strong momentum built across the hospitality sector, those groups without a cage-free egg policy are well-positioned to catch up with industry leaders and demonstrate commitment to food safety and animal welfare, Tse said. We've seen hotels of all sizes successfully make this shift, and Lever Foundation is committed to providing guidance and resources to help Thai hotel groups develop policies that work for their business while advancing animal welfare and food safety.

Cage-free eggs are laid by hens who can move around freely and engage in natural behaviors such as feeding, laying, resting, and dust-bathing. Dozens of peer-reviewed scientific studies have found that hens raised outside of cages produce eggs with far greater food safety, higher nutritional value, and quality. An increasing number of consumers have also been leaving eggs off their plates as the best way to help laying hens.
