Desert Wellness: From Blue Therapy to Beige

The "beige therapy" trend reframes desert destinations as wellness propositions built around silence, darkness, and vastness rather than conventional spa-and-golf resort amenities.

"Beige is the new blue therapy", popularised as a 2026 wellness-travel trend by Condé Nast Traveller, offers a new way to look at an old hospitality proposition. Where blue therapy draws on the restorative associations of oceans and other blue spaces, beige therapy turns to the desert: its stillness, vast horizons, quiet and dark skies.

Desert destinations, from the American Southwest and Palm Springs to Marsa Alam in Egypt, have been attracting health and wellness travellers for decades, combining desert landscapes with spas, thermal waters, outdoor activities and retreat-style hospitality. So, what is changing now?

Historically, a desert resort might sell spa + golf + pool + sunshine + beautiful scenery. This was essentially a conventional resort model adapted to a distinctive climate and landscape. The desert provided the sunshine, views and sense of escape, while the core guest experience was built around familiar leisure amenities: a spa for treatments and relaxation, golf and outdoor activities for recreation, pools for cooling off, and comfortable accommodation designed to make the most of the climate. The landscape mattered, but largely as a setting for the resort experience.

Rather than defining desert wellness anew, the 2026 conversation around Beige Therapy may draw attention to a set of qualities within the proposition: silence + darkness + vastness + restoration + ritual + nature + spirituality.

The opportunity lies in translating these qualities into the guest experience. Silence and vastness can support a slower pace and a greater sense of space; darkness can open up possibilities around stargazing and nighttime experiences; the landscape can provide a setting for walking, meditation and contemplation; while local nature, culture and traditions can introduce ritual and a stronger sense of place. In this sense, the emerging direction is about expanding what desert wellness can mean, from enjoying conventional resort amenities in the desert to engaging more directly with the environmental and cultural qualities that make the desert distinctive.

Many hotels have a desert location, but relatively few have fully designed the guest journey around the psychological qualities of the desert. That may be where the next generation of desert resorts can find a point of differentiation: making the desert itself an integral part of the wellness experience.
