From Open Standards to Brand Experience: Rethinking the Hotel Key Card
The article argues that open-standard key card systems give hotels vendor flexibility and credential control, while sustainable, custom-designed physical cards double as brand touchpoints.

As hotel access continues to evolve, the physical key card still has an important role to play. With an open-standard approach, hotels can retain greater flexibility and control over their credential ecosystem, while a thoughtfully designed key card is much more than a means of opening a door.
1. OPEN STANDARD: Flexibility and Control
An open-standard credential ecosystem gives hotels greater flexibility and reduces dependence on a single technology or vendor. For hotel operators, this can mean greater control over credential issuance, revocation, branding, and infrastructure.
Hotels can determine who receives access, when that access begins and ends, and when a credential should be cancelled or replaced. Credentials can be issued for individual guests, staff, or specific areas, and access can be revoked when a stay ends, a card is lost, or permissions change.
Just as importantly, an open approach can give hotels greater freedom in managing their infrastructure. Rather than being tied to a single proprietary credential format or supplier, hotels can have more choice in how credentials, encoders, locks, and access-control systems work together.
2. PHYSICAL CREDENTIAL: A Tangible Point of Control
A physical credential serves as a technical access device throughout the stay. Beyond that, it remains visible and present in the guest journey, from check-in, room access, and potentially, beyond checkout.
Thus, it gives the hotel direct control over the appearance and presentation of the credential. The hotel decides how it should look, what information it communicates, and how it fits into the overall guest experience. In other words, the physical credential is part of the access infrastructure, and part of the hotel's physical identity as well.
3. SUSTAINABLE KEY CARD: Turning Access into Experience
If a hotel chooses to offer a physical credential, there is no reason for it to be a generic piece of plastic.
A key card made from wood, PLA (polylactic acid), or plant-based leather can turn an everyday access credential into an extension of the hotel's brand.
Material, texture, color, engraving, printing, and design can all be customized to reflect a property's character. A natural wood grain may complement a nature resort; refined finishes can support a luxury or boutique identity; distinctive designs can reinforce a hotel's sense of place.
The result is a key card that guests can see, feel, and remember.
The opportunity is therefore about rethinking what a hotel key card can be: a credential that the hotel controls, a physical touchpoint that supports the guest journey, and a small but meaningful expression of the brand. Open standards provide flexibility. Physical credentials provide control and presence. Sustainable key cards turn that presence into branding, design, and guest experience.
