Harold Kluit has been appointed as General Manager at Swissôtel Amsterdam

Born in the Netherlands, Harold Kluit has already worked for four years in this hotel as the Director of Revenue & Marketing before taking over as General Manager at the Swissôtel Amsterdam. As a graduate of the Hotel Management School Wageningen, the Netherlands, he began his professional career in 1997 in marketing at the Rabobank in Utrecht. Among other responsibilities, he went on to become a Sales Executive at the Amsterdam Park Hotel and an Operations & Quality Consultant in the Pescini Hotel in Siena, Italy. The 109-room Swissôtel Amsterdam is located at the heart of the historic city centre of Amsterdam. With its 10th century façade, the hotel overlooks Dam Square and is close to many of the sights. It is just a 20-minute drive from Schiphol airport and the main railway station is only a few minutes’ walk away from the hotel. Tom J. Krooswijk has been named General Manager at Hotel de l'Europe

A veteran of the hotel industry, Tom previously made his mark at InterCotinental Hotels & Resorts. His career saw him working in the Middle East, where he held the position of Senior Vice President overseeing 17 hotels in the area, after which he was appointed VP for Eastern Europe and subsequently GM of the 'Grand Inter-Continental Paris' and VP for France and Switzerland. Before accepting this new position he was involved at opening, renovating and repositioning of InterContinental trophy hotels in key destinations: Riyadh, Dubai, the Metropol Hotel in Moscow, Vienna, Paris, and the Carlton in Cannes, just to name a few. Most recently Tom was involved as COO & VP of development/planning for Refad Hotel & Resorts and subsequently for Versailles Properties Holding for various 5-star hotel openings in the Middle East. Tom is a graduate of the Lausanne Hotel Management School.

Caro van Eekelen has been appointed as Managing Director at Accor Hospitality Netherlands

Caro van Eekelen was serving Adagio as COO since 2007. Adagio is a joint venture of Accor and Pierre et Vacances. Past employment includes management positions at Golden Tulip Hotels and Disneyland Resort Paris. Caro van Eekelen is an alum of the The Hague Hotelschool. Current Managing Director Netherlands, Peter Verhoeven has been appointed as next Managing Director for Accor operations in Germany (300+ hotels).

Golden Tulip says 13 Netherlands hotels bankrupt | reuters.com

Loss-making Dutch hotel operator Golden Tulip will file for bankruptcy for 13 hotels in the Netherlands that it directly owns and operates, it said on Tuesday. The decision will not affect franchised or affiliated hotels, of which there are 720 in more than 50 countries, and the affected hotels will continue to operate during the proceedings, the company said. The group owns 60 hotels directly.

CitizenM plans to travel

CitizenM, a new hotel brand that refreshes the notion of turnkey, is selling luxury at a budget price, said Rattan Chadha, company chairman. Not only did CitizenM just open its second hotel Amsterdam, its first, which opened at the Dutch city’s Schiphol Airport last year, is doing bang-up business. “We’re getting a lot of business from up markets,” Chadha said. “Everybody’s getting more budget-conscious, so I think we’re in the right place at the right time.” For now, CitizenM, an urban business hotel concept, is confined to Europe. But there are plans to develop the brand in the United States and India, says Chadha, former owner of the Mexx fashion company and a partner of Oberoi International Hotels and Resorts.

Dutch Association Exec Advises Hoteliers To Avoid Amex Card Use | btnonline.com

A senior figure in an association representing Dutch hotels, restaurants and caterers has urged hotel members to encourage guests to avoid paying with American Express cards. Frans Hazen, chairman of the hotels section of Royal Horeca Netherlands, which has 2,000 hotel members, told Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf that Amex's merchant fees are too high. According to Hazen, his members pay an average of 1.5 percent to MasterCard and Visa but 2.95 to 3.85 percent to Amex. As a result, he has suggested member hoteliers ask guests to pay with an alternative card or by cash. "Experience shows that nine times out of 10 they have another credit card with them," said Hazen. Royal Horeca has a diverse range of member hotels, including large properties for international business travelers. A spokesman told EuroBTN it is seeking a meeting with Amex to discuss its grievances about merchant fees.

Dorien Smit has been appointed as Rooms Division Manager at the InterContinental Amstel Amsterdam

Dorien Smit will be leading the various departments related to the Rooms Division, including the Amstel Health & Fitness Club. The Executive Management Team now consists of three women and three men. Smit was hired as Duty Manager in 2003 and later worked in the position of Revenue Manager until she was promoted to Front Office Manager in 2007. InterContinental Amstel Amsterdam has been regarded as the Netherlands’ most prestigious hotel since it opened its doors in 1867. The hotel has 79 rooms, six banqueting rooms and two restaurants – including Michelin-star restaurant La Rive – as well as a fully equipped Health & Fitness Club.

Franchisees want Golden Tulip brand name-Dutch report | reuters.com

Franchise owners of Golden Tulip hotels said on Wednesday they want to buy the Golden Tulip brand name after the hospitality group said it was going into voluntary receivership, Dutch news agency ANP reported. Golden Tulip, which owns 60 hotels directly with an additional 720 franchised or affiliated across more than 50 countries, said on Tuesday declining occupancy rates and the cost of investing in new hotels had led to a money-losingsituation.
