The Chanler at Cliff Walk Debuts Reimagined Lobby and Guest Spaces, Marking the Next Chapter for the Iconic Newport Mansion
The Chanler at Cliff Walk debuts a newly reimagined lobby and collection of guest spaces, marking the next chapter in the celebrated oceanfront mansion's ongoing evolution. The unveiling follows the 2025 opening of signature restaurant Remy's Loose, and continues a multi-year collaboration between The Chanler at Cliff Walk's Proprietress Lani Shufelt and renowned architecture firm Studio Valerius. Together, the new interiors deepen the property's enduring commitment to craftsmanship, artistry, and a sense of heritage and place along Newport's famed Cliff Walk.
Guided by the philosophy that The Chanler at Cliff Walk is a living work of art, this thoughtful recomposition of the property's shared spaces inspires an entirely new way to immerse in the essence of the estate. Led by Studio Valerius and enhanced by works from a carefully curated collection of artisans and makers, the design concept brings to life a whimsical aesthetic informed by worldly adventures while honoring the many past lives, character, and surrounding coastal beauty of the house. A never-ending sense of discovery is fueled by sculptural forms that echo the rhythm of the Atlantic Ocean just beyond The Chanler's windows, and layered textures, custom millwork, and an expressive palette create a setting that feels both intimate and dramatic. With spaces that have been gradually shaped through stewardship, imagination, and care, visitors can expect no two moments to ever be the same at The Chanler.
At the heart of the transformation is the lobby, where guests will be welcomed by a scalloped white oak wood reception desk accented with hammered brass pinstripes and onyx stone. Behind it, an illuminated brass key display showcases the hotel's 20 room keys, which serves as an intentional nod to the arrival and entrustment ritual that begins one's journey at The Chanler. A striking grand fireplace finished in plum and blush glazed tiles from Zia anchors the room, while ornamental furnishings by designer Kouros Maghsoudi introduce a sense of playful scale and artistry. Enveloping the lobby is a coastal-inspired textured plaster relief by New York-based artist Esteban Monsalve, which rests above custom white oak millwork that frames bronze mirror panels and seagrass wallcoverings by Phillip Jeffries. Dreamlike custom carpets by Paris-based artist Marguerite Le Maire ground the space, while statement lighting from Apparatus, Sophie Lou Jacobson, Cym Warkov, and Blue Green Works introduces sculptural illumination throughout the house.
The journey continues as guests work their way upstairs to the second and third floor corridors, where each floor unfolds as a sensory experience of color, material, and light. Ascending the staircase, guests will encounter a blush pink custom ceramic newel-post light by Cym Warkov that reflects a porous coral statement bursting with light from within, as they are guided up the stairs by a wavy baluster and textured handrail. The second floor reveals raffia-textured wall coverings reminiscent of the coastal Rhode Island landscape and accented by hand-rolled and kiln slumped glass sconces that mark the entry for each guest room. On the third floor, blush pink-striped grasscloth and seaweed-inspired rugs bring a vibrant yet refined sense of movement to the hallways, complemented by brightly glazed mirrors crafted by an emerging ceramic artist.
The final component of this renovation extends to the property's ground-floor guest bathrooms, where glossy glazed tiles and tonal seagrass silk wall coverings envelop the spaces in Castleton green and Spanish pink. Brass-edged mirrors and sculptural sconces add warmth and depth, while the women's restroom is further celebrated with a stone mantle fireplace and dedicated vanity counter to create a quiet moment of pause within the house.
With the completion of its reimagined lobby and public spaces, The Chanler at Cliff Walk enters its next chapter with quiet confidence. The transformation builds on the 2025 debut of Remy's Loose, whose lively spirit and design-forward sensibility first hinted at a new creative direction for the house. Rooted in respect for the mansion's history yet guided by a clear contemporary point of view, the recomposed interiors infuse a greater sense of presence into the shared spaces, inviting guests to linger, gather, and celebrate as naturally as they retreat into moments of quiet reflection. In its new era, The Chanler at Cliff Walk is reintroduced as a place where both playfulness and contemplation coexist, where the grandeur of the past is seamlessly met with an embrace of the present and a nod to the future, and where this renewed experience still remains uniquely, The Chanler.
