Planters Inn Embarks on Landmark Renovation Honoring Charleston’s Enduring Legacy
Planters Inn, one of Charleston’s most iconic historic hotels, today announced a property-wide renovation that will reimagine the storied property for the first time in decades. Set to be completed in January 2027, the multi-phase project will encompass all guestrooms and suites, public spaces, and the acclaimed Peninsula Grill, ushering in a new era for the 182-year-old landmark.
Anchored by its long-standing place within Charleston’s Historic District, this transformation marks a pivotal new chapter for Planters Inn. With a deep respect for the hotel’s legacy, the renovation will build upon the hallmarks that have defined the property since 1844—genuine Southern hospitality, residential-style elegance, elevated Lowcountry cuisine, and a distinct sense of place within Charleston’s historic fabric. Every enhancement has been thoughtfully considered to honor the hotel’s heritage while refining and elevating the guest experience for the future.
Guestrooms and suites will be reimagined with interiors inspired by Charleston’s famed historic mansions, blending a refined Southern residential style with modern comforts. Across the hotel, beloved gathering spaces—including the welcoming lobby, parlor and ivy-lined courtyard designed by acclaimed landscape architect Sheila Wertimer—will be carefully refreshed, while ensuring the charm and soul of the property remain intact.
The revival also extends to Peninsula Grill, where the property’s celebrated culinary program continues its evolution under Executive Chef John Ondo. Long regarded as one of Charleston’s defining dining experiences, Peninsula Grill will deepen its focus on seasonal Lowcountry cuisine, ingredient-driven execution, and a deepened expression of Charleston’s culinary identity—balancing signature favorites with a contemporary perspective on Southern coastal cuisine. The restaurant will remain open to guests and the public in the early weeks of the property renovation, with its own refresh beginning in late August.
The restoration will unfold in two phases over the coming months, with each milestone bringing new spaces and experiences to life. Upon completion in January 2027, Planters Inn will emerge with a renewed sense of timeless character—balancing its rich history with a refined, contemporary sensibility—continuing its enduring legacy as one of Charleston’s most distinctive addresses.
