Ubuyu, A Banyan Tree Escape

Ubuyu is the Group's first safari experience and the second under Banyan Tree Escape, an extension of its flagship Banyan Tree brand offering intentional journeys rooted in purpose and discovery. Escape experiences are designed around a raw immersion in nature, with off-the-beaten-path adventures and meaningful encounters with local communities.

The first — Buahan, a Banyan Tree Escape — is set in an off-the-beaten-track, untouched part of northern Ubud in Bali. Pioneering a "no walls, no doors" concept throughout the retreat and across each of its 16 balés (villas), the adults-only experience is an invitation into a different way of being.

A Wild Tapestry of Nature and Ancestry

Located in southern Tanzania's Iringa region, Ruaha National Park is a vast convergence of ecosystems, where East Africa's sweeping savannahs meet the miombo woodlands of the south. Unlike its more frequented northern counterparts, Ruaha offers a quieter and more intimate experience. It is home to one of Africa's largest elephant populations, the world's highest concentration of lions, and one of the last refuges for the endangered African wild dog. More than 570 bird species also flourish within this rich and varied landscape, adding colour and vitality to its sweeping terrain.

Ruaha holds more than ecological significance. The land is deeply intertwined with the cultures of the Hehe, Bena, and Kinga peoples. Their enduring connection to the Great Ruaha River, which sustains both human and animal life, adds a profound dimension to the landscape.

A Sanctuary to Rewild

Ubuyu takes its name from the Swahili word for the fruit of the baobab, Africa's iconic Tree of Life. Revered for its resilience and longevity, the baobab has provided shelter, nourishment and healing for generations. At Ubuyu, ancient baobabs frame the entrance, standing as natural sentinels to a sanctuary shaped by nature, culture and memory.

The retreat draws inspiration from the flowing curves of the Great Ruaha River and the circular forms of traditional Maasai homesteads. Villas are crafted from locally sourced clay, timber and thatch, with Mninga wood furnishings handcrafted by Tanzanian artisans. Solar power, locally sourced water and a deliberately low-impact footprint reflect Banyan Group's long-standing approach to responsible stewardship, allowing the surrounding landscape to remain the defining feature of the retreat.

Ubuyu features just six private villas, each positioned for privacy along the Great Ruaha River and complete with its own plunge pool. Open, expansive layouts frame views across the savannah, mountains and rolling hills, bringing guests closer to the landscape and the natural movement of wildlife.

The first-phase collection comprises three One-Bedroom River Front Villas, a secluded One-Bedroom River Glade Villa, a spacious Two-Bedroom River View Villa for families and friends, and the signature Ubuyu Private Retreat, a three-suite residence shaped around the organic curve of the Great Ruaha River.

The one- and two-bedroom villas take further cues from traditional Maasai circular dwellings, with open-air showers and expansive decks positioned to capture the sunrise and passing wildlife. The Ubuyu Private Retreat offers a more expansive experience, with three suites, a 360-degree rooftop terrace, firepit lounge and the option of a private chef.

A Deeper Immersion in Ruaha

At the heart of the retreat is the Living Room, an open-air gathering space inspired by the Maasai enkang, or family homestead, where guests and Escape Hosts come together around a central firepit to share stories, meals and experiences. At the Open Kitchen, a plant-forward menu celebrates seasonal ingredients sourced from nearby farms and villages. Familiar dishes such as pilau rice and ugali na maharage ya nazi, a Tanzanian staple of cornmeal porridge served with a creamy coconut bean stew, are thoughtfully reimagined alongside sustainably sourced meats from nearby farms, guided by a zero-waste culinary philosophy.

Above, the rooftop Mganga Bar serves elixirs infused with native botanicals, accompanied by sweeping views of the river and surrounding bushland. Set along the riverbank and open to the breeze, Maji Spa offers restorative rituals rooted in indigenous healing traditions, using local oils and herbs to soothe, balance and renew.

Each stay is guided by a dedicated Escape Host — part guide, storyteller and partner in adventure — with intimate knowledge of the land, wildlife and surrounding communities. Drawing on their knowledge of Ruaha and its people, Escape Hosts shape bespoke experiences that extend beyond the traditional game drive, from walking safaris at first light and cultural exchanges in nearby villages to private riverside dining at dusk. Each journey unfolds at its own pace, shaped around the guest's interests and curiosity while revealing more of Ruaha's wildlife, traditions, landscapes and stories.

Conservation and community engagement are woven into the guest experience through the Ruaha Conservation Project (RCP), with visits designed to deepen understanding while prioritising wildlife welfare. Experiences with the Wahehe community are preceded by cultural briefings and designed around respect, consent and meaningful exchange.

Getting There

Ubuyu is accessed via Msembe Airstrip in Ruaha National Park, followed by a scenic 45- to 60-minute game drive to the retreat. Scheduled flights to Ruaha operate from Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Zanzibar, the Serengeti and Selous with Coastal Aviation, Safari Air Link and Auric Air. A stay of three to four nights is recommended to experience Ruaha at an unhurried pace.
