Cultivated Craftsmanship: A Coastal New England Redesign

DiLeonardo, the award-winning design firm behind the project, drew inspiration from the craftsmanship and maritime traditions that have shaped the area for centuries. Guided by a concept called “Cultivated Craftsmanship,” the new interiors layer rich colors, natural textures, handcrafted details, and locally inspired artwork to evoke New England's character with understated nautical references.

The hotel’s soaring two-story lobby underwent the most significant transformation, emerging as a welcoming living room for the property. New furnishings create cozy settings where guests can gather over coffee, play a board game, catch up on work, or simply relax between outings. Deep blues and emerald greens mingle with coral-rust tones, walnut and gold finishes, and soft velvet and woven fabrics, creating a polished yet comfortable atmosphere. 

A curated art collection by DiLeonardo adds another layer of local character. Striking black-and-white photographs pay tribute to Mystic’s seafaring and shipbuilding past, while abstract interpretations of nautical rope and compass motifs complement prints of boats, birds, lighthouses, and waterside vistas. Shelves adorned with maritime treasures, wood accents, books, and decorative pieces evoke the inviting charm of a classic New England home.

Upstairs, the hotel’s guestrooms continue the visual narrative with new deep-blue area rugs and accents of blue, green, and coral-rust. Nautical-map artwork incorporated into the headboards provides a subtle nod to the region’s longstanding relationship with the sea.

Helmsman Kitchen & Bar: Land, Sea, & Local Legend

The design carries into Helmsman Kitchen & Bar, the hotel’s 100-seat signature restaurant and social hub. A palette of walnut, nautical blue, and merlot is paired with woven textures, brass details, warm lighting, and handcrafted woodwork, creating a setting that transitions easily throughout the day. Guests can start with breakfast, return for dinner, and unwind with cocktails in the lounge in the evening.  Flexible seating accommodates everything from dinner for two to private gatherings of up to 12 seated guests and full buyouts for up to 100 across the restaurant, bar, and outdoor patio, expanding the hotel’s options for meetings and special occasions beyond the traditional ballroom.

Helmsman boasts a modern land-and-sea menu rooted in local flavors, showcasing distinctive takes on New England favorites. Menu highlights include the CT Lobster Roll, offered chilled or butter-poached; Pan-Seared Georges Bank Scallops, highlighting the region’s coastal bounty; the showstopping Mystic Sea Tower, an abundant display of oysters, littlenecks, shrimp cocktail, and chilled lobster designed for sharing; and the premium Rosewood Farms Wagyu Filet Mignon prized for its exceptional marbling and buttery richness. A familiar comfort dish gets added character with the New England Clam Chowder, featuring twice-fried potatoes and smoky, savory accents.

Helmsman’s expansive, local-to-legendary wine program ranges from Connecticut selections to coveted vintages housed within its Captain’s Quarters collection, including a 1985 Château Pétrus, 1982 Château Haut-Brion, and library vintages of Opus One. Monthly multicourse wine dinners bring the program to life, pairing seasonal menus with selections from featured vineyards, regions, and producers while introducing diners to the stories behind each pour. 

Cerulean Beauty & Spa: Inspired by Mystic’s Healing Waters

Beyond the redesigned interiors, Mystic Marriott’s amenities give guests plenty of reason to linger. Drawing on Mystic's healing waters and natural elements, Cerulean Beauty & Spa features a relaxation lounge, infrared sauna, aromatic steam rooms, indoor pool, and 10 treatment rooms, including two duo rooms.
