Originally from Romania, Cernia graduated from the Business and Commercial Institute. With an international career spanning more than 15 years, he has held variety of managerial positions at The Ritz-Carlton Hotels and Bulgari Hotels & Resorts in several countries including Japan, Indonesia, the US and the United Arab Emirates. Cernia joined The Ritz-Carlton Company in 1998, and prior to taking on his new role, he held the position of executive assistant manager, culinary/food and beverage of The Ritz-Carlton, Tokyo, where he led a team of 120 managing nine outlets and delivered a successful business growth model. He was recognized as an outstanding leader in many Ritz-Carlton Hotels he has worked for, and he was also the member of The Ritz-Carlton Advisory Board for Food and Beverage in Southeast Asia from 2007 to 2010.
