Taj Hotels' global ambitions have much room for improvement |

Indian Hotels Company, the owner and manager of Taj Hotels, reported a 29 per cent increase in net loss in the first half of this year at Rs 91 crore, though its stand-alone operations yielded a loss of only Rs 2.3 crore. Much of the loss at the consolidated level was attributed to the drag on account of the three operational properties of the US, including the luxurious Pierre on New York's Fifth Avenue, where the company had spent $100 million towards renovation, double its acquisition price, but far from generating returns.

D.C. wins hotel tax suit against online travel booker Orbitz, others |

A D.C. Superior Court judge has ruled that online travel firms should pay taxes on the full retail price of hotel rooms that they sell to consumers. In a filing released Monday, Judge Craig Iscoe said that the online travel companies, including Expedia, Orbitz, Travelocity and Priceline, must pay a 14.5 percent tax on the full retail price of hotel rooms. The travel companies have been paying taxes on the wholesale price, which is cheaper.

Jumeirah 'committed' to US despite NYC hotel sale | hoteliermiddleeast.com

Jumeirah says it “remains fully committed to the US market” despite the sale of its only New York hotel, Essex House Hotel, which will be rebranded as the first JW Marriott in Manhatten. Jumeirah parent company, Dubai Investment Group (DIG), bought the Essex House in 2005 for $423.9m, according to real estate research and information company Real Capital Analytics. The 509-room Art Deco hotel at 160 Central Park South was sold to Strategic Hotels & Resorts for around $375 million. A DIG spokesperson told reporters the time had been right to sell the hotel.

If you use online travels sites like Orbitz or Priceline to shop around for the best hotel deals, you might be wasting your time. A number of these sites, including Expedia, Travelocity, Priceline, Orbitz and Hotels.com, have been accused of colluding with some of the country's largest hotel companies, including Hilton, Sheraton, Starwood, Marriott and Intercontinental, in a price-fixing scheme, according to a class-action lawsuit filed Monday.

WORLD hotels giant Hilton has lost control of its only site in the centre of Paris, the four-star Hilton Arc de Triomphe, after a court battle with the owners. Property owner Société Immobilière et Hôtelière du Parc Monceau had complained that Hilton had "changed commercial strategy, leading to serious breaches of its obligations". A court agreed that this was enough to strip Hilton of its rights to manage the hotel, which it had controlled since 2004.

Advocates for disabled to boycott hotels over pool access | latimes.com

A coalition of disability rights groups has called for a boycott of just more than 100 hotels across the country to protest the resistance by industry leaders to install equipment to make hotel pools accessible to handicapped guests. The Americans With Disabilities Act calls on owners of public pools, such as hotels and recreation centers, to install permanent lifts or ramps to give easier access to disabled guests. The equipment costs between $2,500 and $6,500 per pool.

The owner of The Modern Honolulu hotel in Waikiki has settled a bitter and costly dispute with the luxury hotel’s former operator, Marriott International, in a move that clears the way for the property to exit bankruptcy. Modern owner M Waikiki LLC will pay Marriott an undisclosed sum in return for the hotel management firm dropping a lawsuit and withdrawing its opposition to a Chapter 11 reorganization plan for the 353-room hotel that Marriott helped design and open two years ago.

Emaar Hospitality Group, the hospitality & leisure subsidiary of global property developer Emaar Properties PJSC, has acquired the management of Al Manzil and Qamardeen hotels, two key hospitality assets of Emaar, located in Downtown Dubai. The two hotels were earlier managed by Southern Sun Hotel Group. With Emaar Hospitality Group assuming the day-to-day operations of the two hotels, the Emaar subsidiary now has seven hotels in Dubai under its management including five Address Hotels + Resorts.

In spite of a stout and continued rebound in the hotel industry, when it comes to negotiating hotel management agreements, it’s the owners who are still in the driver’s seat. That is the sentiment according to panelists on the forthcoming “Negotiating the Hotel Management Agreement” workshop at the NYU Hospitality Conference in New York. “We are looking at it over a longer period of time, not how things have changed from 2011-2012,” said Keith Pattiz, who is chairman of the real estate practice group and managing partner at New York law firm McDermott Will & Emery LLP. Pattiz is also the moderator of the discussion. “The group consensus is that the pendulum has swung in the direction of owners. Even though the economy is improving, looking back to 2007, changes were made and there’s no going back.”
